Yes. The clip on hoods get knocked off too easily. The rubber ones stay on. That’s the original, first edition of the Nikon 105 f/2.5 glass.

Thanks and I agree with you. Nice image!

Is that a rubber lens hood? I lost mine years ago and replaced it with a metal one.

Yes. The clip-on hoods get knocked off too easily. The rubber one don’t.

Please excuse me for my recent ramblings. It’s just that I’m enduring a temporary health issue that has me bedridden. I suppose it’s the extra time on my hands, and just trying to occupy it in any way possible. I assure you that I’ll lay low and try not to become a nuisance to the groups. And to make matters worse, I can’t grab the new D780 and make some snaps. 😢

Anyways, back to the intended subject. Does anyone miss shooting with the older, smaller, compact primes? I have and use the Tamron SP 20-40, Nikon 24-120 f/4 VR and the Nikon 70-200 f/4 VR glass, and I really like them. But have you noticed that today’s modern primes are as large and heavy as zooms? Being a prolific street shooter, I find it so liberating when I just screw on a small prime and blast away. I find it more liberating, and conducive to creative image making.

There is no right or wrong approach. We should all do what works for us individually. Just my take on photography. 🤔

Nikon 35mm lens on a Nikon D5500. Fast, easy to hold, and non-threatening. Image quality very good. Used to shoot street scenes and outdoor concerts at night (pre-pandemic). Fits in a large coat pocket!

Smaller the better for street photography, IMO.

Smaller can improve DoF too.

Very nice, can't get much smaller than your setup.
Thanks for sharing. One of my favorite film cameras is a snall Olympus 35 RC and it can shoot on auto. Great pocket camera. I just loaded it up with Fugi slide film the other day.

Had a pair of RCs. Size allowed easily carrying two different films loaded.

A few cameras were smaller but none of those micro minis combined RF and full manual controls. RCs didn’t even need a battery. It’s toadally mechanical.

I agree, nice camera. I purchased a chip for the battery so I can use new batteries without a loss in voltage. Now the meter is correct without adjustment.

I ended last century shooting film in Olympus OM cameras, mainly with prime lenses. Still have them, still go click so probably work, still have ALL the backup (accessories, film, chemicals, darkroom, notes, books), but too old to care. Now I live the dream of TV in same room as processor (computer). Sooooo much easier.

I agree. I just upgraded ftom a Nikon F2 to a Z6ii, so I am a person that keeps his gear in working order. My film gear will still get used.

I’ll never quit burning film.

Canon has focused, if you will, on making new lenses for their mirrorless lineup of cameras. These lenses are smaller and lighter than the older EF versions, and they have come out with some new prime lenses that are supposedly very good - and they are very small and not very expensive (compared to their telephoto and zoom lenses. So it seems there is still interest and usefulness for those!

I love shooting with my very small, lightweight Fuji F/2 primes as well as my slightly larger f/1.2 and 1.4 primes. They fit nicely on my XT-3 and XT-4 bodies and are extremely sharp. I use them mostly when in challenging light conditions (inside without flash) or when shooting street scenes. But when shooting landscape or events, I rely on my Fuji zooms. Moved to Fuji from Nikon to save weight and to have smaller footprint when shooting street. No regrets. Have even printed up to 60” on aluminum for exhibits.

No, it annoys me when people think snapshots are photographs. For too long, "art critics" said photography could not be an art form. Their perception of "photos" was Aunt Martha's photo album.

It's a matter of intent, really. Are you telling me a story or suggesting some emotion, or are you just showing me randomness? Blurry, underexposed, crooked snapshots of Dog Spot from 1943 probably mean nothing unless you knew Spot. Photos generally have broad appeal or purpose.

To use the old small prime you would also need small body. Most of the bodies made today are too large even the APS-C ones are still large compared to the old 35mm full frame film camera.
I have a number of small lenses and when I put them on my Nikon Df they look awful together as the Nikon Df is too big.

And that is why I left Nikon for Panasonic! Small, lightweight kits with stellar optics...doesn't get any better than my GX-9 and 20mm f1.7 pancake lens. Nikon and Canon don't come close in size or quality of results for such a small package!

My tech you son in law has a Google pixel 6 and I am impressed! He took a challenging evening closeup picture of my dog on the beach with a sunset red sky in the far distance.
My iPhone 11 got the dog with good exposure but the beautiful red sky was just a bright sunset.
His phone was more detailed of the closeup of the dog, lighting great, even capturing the red sunset. Then he showed a person and a tree he didn’t want, clicked edit, touched each object and bang they were gone. Like photoshop in a bottle and the removals were flawless - could not detect where those areas looked manipulated. WOW!
