Primes

Please excuse me for my recent ramblings. It’s just that I’m enduring a temporary health issue that has me bedridden. I suppose it’s the extra time on my hands, and just trying to occupy it in any way possible. I assure you that I’ll lay low and try not to become a nuisance to the groups. And to make matters worse, I can’t grab the new D780 and make some snaps. 😢

Anyways, back to the intended subject. Does anyone miss shooting with the older, smaller, compact primes? I have and use the Tamron SP 20-40, Nikon 24-120 f/4 VR and the Nikon 70-200 f/4 VR glass, and I really like them. But have you noticed that today’s modern primes are as large and heavy as zooms? Being a prolific street shooter, I find it so liberating when I just screw on a small prime and blast away. I find it more liberating, and conducive to creative image making.

There is no right or wrong approach. We should all do what works for us individually. Just my take on photography. 🤔

To use the old small prime you would also need small body. Most of the bodies made today are too large even the APS-C ones are still large compared to the old 35mm full frame film camera.
I have a number of small lenses and when I put them on my Nikon Df they look awful together as the Nikon Df is too big.

Is the Df bigger than the D750 and D780 with accessory grips?

So if you use the small primes that I have your cameras are too big and look very ugly.

No - and it is a matter of taste. I have a DF in addition to newer (and older) digital Nikons. I use and like my smaller primes, and zooms BTW, on any of the cameras - even my D3 which is quite large. They are still the excellent lenses they always were, possibly except for extreme pixelpeepers.

Nikon still has in production a number of AF-D lenses that are small and light. You can also find many out of production AF and AF-D lenses in the used market that are in great shape. Nikon also has some AI-S manual focus lenses in production. Voigtlander also makes F-mount MF lenses These are all small and light when compared to Nikkor AF-S lenses.

You do not need to apologize for your "rambling". You are asking legitimate questions that other people may be interested in also---even if they do not comment.

It is great that you are trying to stay as active as possible in your mind. That is critically important. You have to keep using your mind or before you know it it will begin to rust shut.

I have a friend who was bedridden for a short time and now that he is up and around and able to do things he spends every day sitting in a chair reading and watching news shows on tv. The affect that is having on his mind and body as his areas of interest continue to decline is very noticeable.

You are to be commended on what you are doing. Stay Active

First, get well soon.

Second. I enjoy my little Oly OMD Em1 m ii which is tiny. I add a small prime, like the 12 mm. The size of a point and shoot but mirrorless m43. A lot of fun.

You attached a photo of two Nikons each with a different lens. Are you contrasting a large vs a small lens ? Or if not, are the lenses supposed to be “classically” small primes ? Or are they supposed to be two examples of oversized modern lenses ?

There’s no caption and no download so I’m left to guess, which of those three circumstancese you illustrating ?!?

All was that *was* true in the not really ancient past ... like within the memory of a generation. But that was then and this is now.

Be careful sport, you’re starting to sound like your idol, Old WI, or whatever his alias is. The last thing this forum needs is another jerk.
Just sayin’. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Your either (both?) older than I am, or caught the bug earlier, but I am not familiar with the gear of which you speak. I had to go back and look at the picture to be sure that’s what you were referring to.
Anyway, is that a Nikon lens on a Canon camera? Was that a thing? And, what is the guitar pick sticking out between the lens and the mount?
Not being an ass, just ignorant.
