I expect that the R1 will jump over the Z9 however at what point is enough really enough for the average user. I think we have reached that point.

I, as many, are following the Z9 to confirm that Nikon is still committed to innovation and excellence. While I may be able to purchase the Z9; I consider myself 'an average user'. Average users do not purchase the top of the line equipment from any manufacturer. This equipment is targeted to professionals who can justify the cost. This is why we have Z6ii,Z7ii, and D850. I'm hopeful that Nikon's innovations will find their way to their non-pro models.

I expect that Canon pretty much knows many of the features. It is getting very difficult to keep things secret anymore

Average users and even below average user do purchase top of the line equipment. We know in our hearts it improves our images. I have been trying to prove this for 40+ years, and when I do you will eat your words!

What do you or him mean by average users? I don't think he meant skill but rather budget.

I am not talking about average people who do purchase..they are not the target and they do not make up the greatest or even large percentage of purchasers. There will always be those who have to have the greatest and best no matter the cost..no matter their need...no matter their expertise. When the Z9 comes out...why don't you set up a questionnaire that will include the following: Will you purchase the Z9..Yes/No; How do you rate yourself as a photographer? Beginner, Novice, Amateur, Professional? Do you earn income from your Photography? Yes/No.
Maybe you will turn out to be right...and maybe not.

Those who don't want a new camera don't want to succeed.

When you see these don't take things seriously. Just smile and move on.

Now that I don't think I am average and I won't buy the Z9 nor R3.

Personally, I have found that the greatness or limitations of any camera that I have had my hands on were due to me operating it....not that of the camera.

Once upon a time, I was interested in a stereo system so I went to what was believed to be the high-end audio supplier's showroom where they could play the various systems that they offered. The room was acoustically engineered to bring out the best that the systems had to offer. The salesman started by going over all of the technical specifications and showed me comparative charts and diagrams. He would then turn each system on one by one for me to "hear the differences".

Of course, he saved the best for last and said, "Now...this is what $10,000 sounds like" and after listening to it for a bit I told him, "Well, it may be what $10,000 sounds like however, I only have $1,000 ears and I can't tell that much difference between it and the first one".

The same holds true for any of my cameras. Regardless of how advanced its features are....I can always screw it up!

...I don't care. My name/account is in the queue. Hype is hype, a tool is what we're talking about and, once I have it, several of my bodies go on the block.

I do not know why the photo media keeps trying to compare these two models. The Z9 is probably going to win in most categories but the Z9 is the Nikon flagship. The R3 is not the flagship according to Canon. The what is expected to be the R1 will be the new flagship. I expect this will be announced in 2022. Once released the R1 can be compared to the Z9 and only then. For that round I expect that the R1 will be the best camera since Nikon will ship first and Canon if it makes sense can add or upgrade features before announcing and shipping

Makes little difference. Most of the difference between the two camera's will be the skill of the photographer.
AS IT ALWAYS WAS AND WILL BE. Nothing new, nothing different, only the skill of the photographer makes the real and lasting difference.

If we gave two people either of these two new cameras camera and similar lenses, and after a week we learned only one had been using the EOS R3, who do you think will be better?

Nothing changes after a week. They are as good as before you gave them the cameras.
