My wife and I plan a short trip for Boston (2 days) and NH (3 days)(staying in Glen, NH) for fall colors.
Last time I was in Boston as almost 40 years ago, and never outside the city.
Any particular UHH suggestions for sites to see/visit/photograph?
THanks
Andre

From Glen it’s not too far to the Mount Washington Cog Railway.

When shooting from the train, use bursts. Cog wheel drive is jerky. From each short burst, 1 or 2 frames will be from between the jerks.

There’s a weather station at the summit with a sign warning ”Welcome to Mount Washington, home of the worst weather in the world.” It actually means exactly that. The real whole world ! Forewarned is forearmed. There’s skiing in July.

Franconia is less than an hour from Glen. There's a spot called Artist's Bluff. It's a hike up a hillside. Not sure of your age or health, but I'm an out-of-shape-overweight 69 year old male and I made the climb.

In Boston check out The Freedom Trail. Follow the red line on the sidewalks and streets. One night dinner at Abe's and Louie's. Head north on 93, get off at exit 20. Drive to Gunstock Ski area. The lift should be running. The views from the top are spectacular. Lake Winnipesaukee and the mountains. Head North to the Kank(Kancamagus) Highway) in Lincoln ends in Conway. Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods is worth a stop. If the weather is right be prepared for traffic.

Glen is located on 302 at the junction of the road to the Pinkham Notch and Crawford Notch. Take 302 north as it’s spectacular. The Kank will take you to the Franconia Notch side where Artists Bluff is. Glen Ellis falls should be in fine form this year, close to the Pinkham Notch visitor center. Parking on the weekend will be challenging everywhere, so arrive early. There is a seasonally open road off the Kank, Bear Notch Road, that’s worth taking. Enjoy.

Try to avoid Boston and suburbs from 10/8 to 10/29. The annual Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) will be held 10/22 and 10/23 - right at the peak of fall colors in Boston. It involves 2,300 participants and 790 clubs - from all over the world. It may be hard to book a hotel at this point - the event and fall colors draws 60,000 to 80,000 people to Boston. That is when you'd want to be in Glen, Conway, etc.

Boston is a beautiful city, and I have found numerous photo ops everywhere. Your inner street photographer won't need any coaxing. . .

Glen is right near Jackson, a major center for cross country skiing. The ski trails have gentle slopes, which makes them very easy to walk when there is no snow. The Kancamagus Highway is stunning when it is in full color. Sabbaday Falls, (off Rte 112) is particularly beautiful, especially when the water is running. Cannon Mountain opens its tramway for Peepers, and at the summit there is a 360° view if I remember correctly, plus lots of paths, an observation deck etc. Woodstock has Lost River Gorge, Conway has Rocky Gorge and the Conway Scenic Railroad, which is always a lot of laid-back, low energy fun if you prefer that.

I am jealous. I used to go up there all winter long for skiing, and numerous times during the warmer months for hiking/backpacking. It would take me 15 hours to get there from southern Delaware, and the nearest thing that comes close to a mountain that is close to me is Skyline Drive - which gets clogged with tourists right at leaf peak season.

I've been backcountry telemarking at Tuckerman's Ravine/Hilman's Highway on July 4th. Nothing like skiing in short sleeves and shorts with day temps in the 70s and higher. Snow gets a little sticky though.

Try a boat tour of Squam Lake in Holderness, NH if you get tired of walking and hiking mountains. It’s a 1-1/2 hour guided cruise offered by the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. Tickets at nhnature.org. This is the lake where the movie On Golden Pond was filmed.

Thank you all for the suggestions that would keep us busy for several weeks. For those that asked: 74 and hiking-able , unfortunately haven’t skied over 10 years for backtrouble (and wife not skiing). I probably won’t need to schlepp my 100-400 lens. Will try and post afterwards. Happy Holidays.

In NH, you're staying in the heart of the White Mountains, so recommend touring exclusively there during your stay. Should be lots of foliage opportunities with peak times around end of Sept. Kancamagus Highway is a must. Mount Washington summit is accessible via auto road or cog railroad and, provided weather cooperates, is very scenic. Be prepared for cold weather at the summit. You'll likely want to spend some time in the touristy North Conway - be prepared for crowds and traffic. Outside of North Conway, Cathedral Ledge is a 700 foot overlook that you can drive up. Rock climbers can be observed as they ascend the vertical wall of the ledge. Nice views from there. Cannon Mountain has a tram - get tickets online in advance. Near there is the Flume Gorge of Franconia Notch. Its a worthwhile hike but can be a bit strenuous.

I noticed your location information. I was born in Yonkers, Bellevue Ave., and now live in LSD. Just came back from a trip through northern NE and we stayed 2 nites at the Eagle Mountain House before going to Moosehead and then Tenants Harbor. Great time.

Lake Winnipesaukee in NH is beautiful, and the area around it is worth seeing.
