Then, I back everything up (TWICE), reformat my drive, install all fresh copies of all the software I still use, and initialize them. Finally, I migrate back just the data I want on my main drive.
In 2019, I did this when installing an SSD with double the storage, then doubling my RAM while I was in there. That was a perfect opportunity to upgrade the OS, and all my software, and to do a completely clean installation. It was like getting a new computer. It took a couple of days, but was well worth the speed boost.
This past week, I bought a new M1 MacBook Air, and did essentially the same thing.
I recommend Carbon Copy Cloner for those who want to be sure EVERYTHING is backed up. CCC makes a mirror image of your drive that can be fully bootable.
