I thought CleanMyMac was another one of those worthless programs, but many Mac users on YouTube list it as one of their must-have programs. I seem to remember hearing negative comments about CleanMyPC. Any opinions?
How does it know what's "dirty"?

It's very, very smart, and it has a fantastic sense of smell.
Those cleaning programs seem to slow things down for me and are constantly asking me if I want to do this or that. But I suppose theyβd can be of helpβ¦

Jerry,....can you recommend a good cleaning program that you know of or have used for a mac.
My wife has used a mac forever,...and has never and I mean never used a cleaning utility,...she instead constantly figures self works arounds to resolve issues,....some are very cumbersome but she keeps it going somehow complaining all the while..
I would like to help her out but fear messing up her methodology and way of doing things,...if you know what I mean.
Anyway I would appreciate your input any suggestions if it's not to much trouble.
Thank you muchly.

Clean My Mac is an excellent program. I have it on both my MBP's
I've used Clean my Mac since it was recommended by TechTalk America. I'm pleased with it and use it regularly.

Apparently, CleanMyMac is the one to get. I've had three Macs since 2012 - never been "cleaned."
After I was scammed I purchased Trend Micro and early indications are that this a comprehensive program.

I see it's by subscription or $90! I've gotten by without it for nine years.
"Memory Clean 3" is fast, frees up a lot of memory and costs only $10.00 but I can't see that it particularly improves my iMac's performance. CleanMyMac seems a little pricey at $90.00.
BTW as I scrolled down looking at responses, guess which advertisement was inserted between two of them? Yup; there was an ad and link for CleanMyMac. If their program is as fast as their algorithm monitoring and responding to posts, maybe I should consider it.
I use CleanMyMac and have found it to be reliable, fast, and very effective in speeding up my Mac, especially after using Topaz DeNoise and AiSharpen which seem to leave behind "stuff" in RAM and gradually slows down the Topaz processing the more it is used. I even get a warning message pop-up about RAM is almost filled to the limit after using Topaz for about an hour on probably 5-10 files. I then run CleanMyMac and go back to Topaz which then runs really fast again.
I love it and feel I'm getting my money's worth.

Never used it...
However, what I do is
> Uninstall unused software using the uninstaller that came with the program.
> Periodically back up seldom-used files to external drives.
> About every three years, right before a major system upgrade, I first find all the license and installation codes for my software. Then, I back everything up (TWICE), reformat my drive, install all fresh copies of all the software I still use, and initialize them. Finally, I migrate back just the data I want on my main drive.
In 2019, I did this when installing an SSD with double the storage, then doubling my RAM while I was in there. That was a perfect opportunity to upgrade the OS, and all my software, and to do a completely clean installation. It was like getting a new computer. It took a couple of days, but was well worth the speed boost.
This past week, I bought a new M1 MacBook Air, and did essentially the same thing.
I recommend Carbon Copy Cloner for those who want to be sure EVERYTHING is backed up. CCC makes a mirror image of your drive that can be fully bootable.
