Yes, I have a close friend there who runs an adventure touring business in Iceland. My son and I have been on an excursion there with him. Wonderful time. Fridrik Bjarnason; fridrik@eskimos.is.
Thank you and thanks to everyone who has been so very helpful with suggestions and recommendations. We landed on a guide and are looking forward to seeing Iceland first hand (rather than through everyone’s incredible pictures and stories).
I been to Iceland twice, my suggestion grab a map and a car. The photo tours I seen while there are, get out of vehicle take photo get in and go. Do it on your own, not hard to get around. It’s breathtaking and you can move at your own pace. Take your time with your shots. Once you go you will want to go back.
I’m not knocking the tours, if someone has recommended check them out. I just like doing things at my own pace.
Little tid bit, if you fly Iceland Air you can always do a layover in the future in Iceland say if your flying to England you could make a stop and stay a few days and go to your final destination. You can do a layover for up-to 7 days and doesn’t cost extra for the flight.
Thanks, and great idea about Icelandair and laying over.
If you're planning a trip to Iceland, do not watch a new series on Netflix - Katla. It is about a dirty, semi-erupting volcano. Every scene is black and gray. I imagine the whole series is going to be like this - not something Iceland would like to pitch to tourists. : )
I know a couple of people who went to Iceland, and they had a wonderful time. Actually, I was in the airport for a couple of hours - at night. We were flying to London on Icelandic, and all their planes stopped there on the way.

Glad to hear you have hooked up with a guide! I always find it fun to have a local guide, at least for part of the trip. A good guide can steer you to places that avoid the crowds and take you to places that are not in the "common" list of places to visit.
I have always thought that it would be nice to have a website where local guides could list their services and people could post reviews, etc. Kind of like TripAdvisor but with more of a focus on local guides, especially photographic guides. If anyone knows of such a site, I would love to know of it.
See you got a guide , I'm a little slow, anyway enjoy your trip. Went with Mike Mesuel and a Icelandic guide a few years back. thor, thor@thor-photography.com was great we had a great time and he is half crazy which is par for a photographer. tell him that he needs to wear his northern lights socks. Don't know if he will remember me but I gave him my L bracket when I left. Let him know where you want to go and how many people and I'm sure he can fix you up. Good luck and enjoy that great country !!
