I got my R5 in early March. I had ordered the RF100-500 at the same time. Week after week, I was notified week after week that it wasn't available. When I finally called, they told me they filled firm orders first, so I made one. It was shipped 2 or 3 weeks later, but it arrived a week after I had left for a three-week trip. Interestingly enough, I received one more notice it was not available a week after it arrived. (I had kept checking, and Canon USA also did not have it available throughout that time.) I now have it and like it!

I have been waiting for delivery on a Cannon RF 100-500 lens. It’s currently listed as “back order” on all the reputable sites. I’m wondering if anyone has recently obtained one or any other Cannon lens that was on back order and how long the wait was. I recently switched to a Cannon R5 and am anxiously awaiting this lens. Thanks..

I'm not the spelling police; just thought I'd tell you that cannon is what shoots cannon balls, and Canon is the name of the company that is #1 in photography equipment etc....

Back order? a lot of things are back ordered because of the Covid virus. My new kitchen is on a cargo ship in the LA harbor. It was supposed to be here the first week of July. Now it's not till the 1st week in Aug.... Ugh. Just be patient.

Hi,
I have also 1 ordered since beginning May in 2 sites here in Belgium. The only message I get is "Sorry for the delay".
Interestingly, one of the sites, FNAC, is announcing in their website some "partners". One from Canary Islands saying they have 3 in stock, but they sell it at. 4,000€ aprox, and I'm not going to pay this +1,000€. It's just a hobby, so no "life or death" need.
I will wait; in the meantime, I will go with the RF 70 - 200 and the RF 600.
Regards,
Miquel

I got mine from Canon USA when everywhere else was back ordered with a waiting list. It showed in stock but still took about a week+ to get to me. I was very happy! PS the lens is worth waiting for.

I'm in the same boat as mkahn. I ordered mine in mid may and was told I would see one at the end of August.

The extremely high rating of the lens causing great demand is just exceeding Canons ability to produce them and keep the quality control at their high standards.
Have patience.

I found a camera store mentioned on UHH as a reliable alternative to the large camera outlets (B&H, Adorama, etc.) that no doubt had long waiting lists. Their web site made it look like they had the 100-500mm in stock, so I "purchased" it, only to be told they actually didn't have it but expected some "soon", but as it turns out, they did not receive any during the next few weeks

Then I read on DPReview that several people had found the 100-500mm at smaller/mid-size camera outlets. Several stores were mentioned. I then went to Canon USA website to look for authorized Canon stores in major cities not including NYC. I made a list of all of these, then went to each web site and put myself on all of their waiting lists. I even called a few, and was told that they tend to get a small allotment from Canon every few weeks. Some advised that preordering puts one higher up on the waiting list compared to those who plan to purchase when the lens becomes available. Ultimately I was able to purchase the 100-500mm within 3-4 weeks.

Here's the thread on DPReview:

Hope this helps!

That is how I got my Tamron 150-600 first generation when it was the first of the 150-600s to hit the market. I was on a waiting list at the big stores so I went to check at the local store. I told them I wanted to get on their list to get one. "We just got in the first 5 we ordered about an hour ago. Three were pre-ordered you can have one of the other two." A guy who came in while I was buying it took #5. So in about two hours they went from none to 5 to none again.

I read years ago that Robert E. Lee and the South lost the Civil War due to unnecessary cannon backorders. Yes it's true. It seems the South just could not manufacture cannons fast enough to provide the Southern Army with enough weapons to repel the GAR.

I've been waiting on my order of a cannon. However, I was just notified by ATF that I can't own one legally. That squashed that dream.

Try Canon USA, they may have the lens in stock.

I gave up on B&H so went straight to Canon and ordered it and the 800 f/11. Got them the next week.

Bob, ATF was lying to you. Imagine that, huh?

You sure can own one and when you get ready to buy I can point you in the right direction. They are pricey, think thousands of dollars, but still functional and in good condition.

I agree. It just doesn't seem right that I can have a 155mm howitzer. Just think of the fun I could have with it on July 4th. Just using the powder charge and no projectiles.

My RF 100-500 was on back order for 2 months. Fantastic lens in combination with the R5. It’s a home run for Canon finally!!!!

Chip shortage, so bad that Nikon is delivering new cameras without a battery charger - use your old one or find a third party charger that will work. If you can find those.
Cameras , lenses, flashes, batteries and chargers among other things all have chips.

Same with new cars, no chips, no cars so the price of good used ones is going up like a rocket - 30% over last year according to one automotive site. And my wife wants another car - at 66 she is starting to have problems getting into her low riding Honda Civic. She takes my SUV a lot of the time. If something happens and I need to go somewhere I might have to call the paramedics to get me in and out of her Civic. I'm 75 but discovered the joys of a high vehicle with big doors when I got an Astro Van in 89.

Fact check, You still get a battery charger with Nikon cameras, just not the extra USB-C charger that charges through the camera, that is the one they are short of chips for. The charger that is still included just has you charge the camera battery outside of the camera body like folks did before.

Cheers
