Unfortunately, I have a suspicion that your diagnosis is spot on! We have a pretty good camera store here and I will be in touch with them shortly.

Removing the batteries is an idea that is simple and I had not thought of! Good idea. I will give it a try and hope for a simple solution.

Is it autofocus or vibration reduction that runs continuously? You said you put the lens in manual focus and it kept doing it. It can't be continuously focusing if it's in manual focus.

I have a Nikon 70-300mm AF-S lens. You can hear the VR working. It sounds like running water while VR working.

It hums and the image seems to jump around when looking through the viewfinder. If it’s not auto focus, I don’t know what it is and it appears I need some help from someone a lot wiser than I am.

If autofocus continued to run, it would continuously try to focus from near to far. If VR continued to run, the image would continue to jump around trying to stabilise. What happens when you set it on a table or tripod, turned on, with hands off?

I put the lens back on the camera and tried your suggestion...It worked...and then it didn't...Now it looks like an intermittent issue. I hope it will malfunction for the lens mechanic! It's about a $1K lens. It is also my "go to" lens for general photography. I hope it is repairable.

It's a pretty good lens - should be worth repairing. Good luck!

And we have no idea whose suggestion you tried because you didn’t choose “quote reply”.

It is easy to determine whether the problem is AF or VR. If AF, you will be able to see the distance scale moving in its window. If VR, there should be no movement of that scale. Knowing which will allow a much more definitive discussion with Nikon service.

Also...when evaluating repair vs. replace, you may want to keep in mind that very nice used copies of that lens are readily available for around $450.

I believe that is a good piece of advice. Eventually after being unable to buy a new or used lens from my local camera shop, I found one on eBay and have it on order. At least I can have one to use and then decide later what to do with the one that is not operational.
