I have a Nikon D850 and had a Nikon 24-120 Zoom lens on it. All was working well and then all of a sudden the auto-focus just kept running such that it was unusable. I turned off the Auto-focus and that changed nothing. I selected Manual Focus and nothing changed. I put a 70-135 Nikon lens on the D850 and all worked perfectly. I put the 24-120 lens on my D800 and had the same problem with the continuous auto-focus.
Any suggestions to try first before taking it to a repair shop?
Thanks for any recommendations you have,
Common denominator, the lens...
Suspect.
Have you cleaned the contacts on the lens?
Yes, I did that too. Sorry should have mentioned that in the body of the message.
Are you sure it isn’t VR?
Have you tried changing focus mode and area.
How about maybe it's the focus point unable to find a subject and running rampantly in the viewfinder? Try locking it and see if you achieve focus.
Thank you, good suggestion but I tried it and that one did not work either. It's looking more and more like a trip to the shop!
VR on or off and no difference. Good idea! Thanks

interesting! I have no idea where that phone number will take me, however, people on this website have been very helpful and I will give it a whirl. Thank you for the suggestion.
Sounds like an electrical problem in the lens. Maybe a switch or circuit board. I would call Nikon for a guesstimate on a repair vs a price on a great shape used one, from Nikon or from a camera store/ebay.
Try removing the batteries for a reset.

No batteries in the lens.

Try and remove and reset the batteries in the camera. Make sure VR is off.

The camera isn’t the problem.
I had a somewhat similar experience using a Tamron 100-400 (Canon mount with the SIgma adapter for Canon-> SONY E mount) on my SONY A6500 and then briefly on my A7R4. I would even turn off the camera, and it would occasionally continue to sound like the focusing motor was running. I brought it to the dealer from whom I bought it, they sent it back to Tamron and Tamron service seem to have fixed the problem. It no longer happens. THey also improved the focus accuracy (which was generally pretty good even before the repair) and cleaned the internal parts, according to the invoice. Tamron has a 6 year warranty. There was no charge other than the cost of shipping it to Tamron. It took about a month before I got it back (that was during the height of the COVID 19 pandemic).
