We accomplish things by directing our desires, not by ignoring them.

I am in agreement. Once, during a workshop by nature photographer John Shaw in Central Florida he had on a table a set of some of the photographs he had made over the years. I remember he asked those in attendance to identify those made with digital and those made with film. Not a single person could do that. I was able to identify one made with film because I have seen it in one of his books.

Digital, at low ISO characteristically is grain (noise) free while film at large enlargements show some grain. Other than that it is not easy to tell the difference.

Your statement, "while film at large enlargements show some grain".

I only disagree because my Hasselblad and Crown Graphic made giant grain free enlargements.

I agree, no one can tell, what camera you took the shot with. Well said Gene51.

Really?
Sales do not show that at all.
Sony is a distant second.

Wrong again Architect1776, Sony sells more fullframe cameras than either Canon or Nikon worldwide (mirrorless or otherwise) . Just a fact, look it up. Canon may sell overall more cameras if you include all sizes and formats, but Sony has been and is still the leader in fullframe, worldwide. And in Japan, 5 of the top 10 selling mirrorless cameras are made by Sony, and NOT Canon or Nikon.

Nikon and Canon are just racing to compete with mirrorless tech that Sony developed and innovated first .

As a former Nikon and Canon pro shooter for over 40+ years, I wish both Nikon and Canon well with their releases, as competition keeps them all innovating.

Nikon and Canon lovers and fanboys here in UHH just cant face the fact that Sony still leads in the mirrorless world and Canon and Nikon are playing catch up, with Canon doing better than Nikon.

The Nikon Z9 will use Sony's 50mp fullframe stacked sensor from the current Sony A1.Nikon has been a longime client for Sony sensors. And Canon's R3 will unveil its first Canon-made fullframe stacked sensor. Fullframe stacked sensors were first introduced in the Sony A9 back on April 19, 2017, and it took Canon and Nikon four years to get here.

Cheers

Before our Sony FanBoyz get too overheated, it's important to remember that in total camera sales as recent as 2019 (a 'regular' year), worldwide Canon sold more cameras than Sony AND Nikon COMBINED. So, getting excited about Sony's performance in one major market is exciting, but misrepresents how much bigger Canon is in cameras. Sony, as a conglomerate of businesses, is much bigger than Canon.

What should be concerning to Nikon FanBoyz is that for every 5 MILCs sold by Sony and 5 MILCs sold by Canon, Nikon sold only 1. In 2020 that was a combined 2.2 million to Nikon's 250,000. Sony and Canon roughly split the 2020 global MILC market at 1.15 to 1.05 million each respectively.

As a pro, fullframe mirrorless is what matters to me and in fullframe (mirrorless or DSLR), Sony by far sells more cameras. Do the research.

And fullframe mirrorless is where Sony, Canon and Nikon are putting their latest tech, innovation and development money.

So fullframe mirrorless is really the top of the camera food chain now, so Canon's mass sales of smaller, compact and DSLR cameras isn't part of this discussion here . We are talking flagship Nikon Z9, Canon R3 and Sony A1 cameras and they are all fullframe and mirrorless. I rest my case.

Resting your case on 2 of three cameras that aren't even being sold is a little early on a Sunday morning ...

No you misunderstood again. I rest my case that what matters in this discussion is fullframe mirrorless, not DSLR or smaller and compact cameras. And I wasn't the one that started this post about Canon VS Nikon, which focused on the "development" announcements from Nikon and Canon about the Z9, R3 and R1. I agree the only real camera we have yet in this range is the A1.

Cheers

Not much grain with 4x5 but 120 could show plenty enough.

Let me add one more thought: During all of my "film" years, I used exclusively Nikon, their top camera with top Nikor lenses. Then when I switched to digital, I switched to Canon, and now with a top camera and with top lenses.

I believe a high quality image can be captured with either brand.

Looks like we've got a storm a-brewin'. Not only is Canon coming out with the R3 but I just saw that Nikon is coming out with a Z9. This is going to be fun to watch.

Just go with Sony and be done with it!
