I'm looking for experienced users of the above software. Any comments by users are appreciated. I don't want to start the should you or should you not tweek your hardware argument please. Lol. I've watched Steve Perry's video and have both of his Nikon books. I have a Spyder lens cal target. Thanks in advance.

No question - Reikan FoCal. Takes all the subjective judgement out of the equation (i’ve used both). Hint: buy the pro version of FoCal - well worth the extra $20 and give you very useful info. such as aperture vs acuity charts.

For that price? You can do it yourself.

You already spent too much on the Spyder stuff. Read their instructions, or follow Steve's video. You can do it w/o starting a money pit.

For those interested the cheapest lens alignment tools are in your tool box... Don't buy anything.

Have you actually tried FoCal? Can you produce a chart like this? Can you actually tell how sharp your lens is? If you got a bad copy? Or what aperture is the sharpest? Nope.

Thanks for the reply. I was leaning that way due to all the extra info or data. Yes the pro version is much better than the regular version. Never half step. Lol.

Well apparently you are not aware of the 15.00 I paid for the Spyder cal on ebay used. Still in the box with all the paperwork. Lol. I ask for people who have used the two pieces of software. I'm not impressed by the understanding of the english language by people at times. I must admit it is a complicated and sometimes silly language. I have made many mistakes with it over the years and probably am not done. Lol I also believe that if I pay several thousand dollars for a lens a few hundred may be a good and relatively cheap way to ensure the very best performance. Of course that is an opinion and we know what they say about opinions. Everyone has one and they all stink. Lmao.

Absolutely. For less than $100, you can be assured that you get 100% of all those thousands of $ you spent for that good glass.

I calibrate all my lenses. It just does not cost a dime. A vertical panel with a printed page on it, a ruler a 45 degrees and a tripod....

I agree that it sounds 'cheap' comparing the few Ks I have invested but at the time, avoiding unnecessary 'purchases' is what allows me to have what I/we have.

Fancy graphs? Sorry, not my cup of tea. I know what I purchase, why I purchase it and how to optimize what I use.

You had a great deal on E-Bay? GREAT. I just purchased a medical lens today on it. Now I am waiting for it to arrive to see if it 'mint' or not. Always the same issue but the seller offers 30 days return so... Limited risk. I am concerned about the battery's health... Calibration for that one will not be an issue since there is no AF... Luckily there is always 'live view'.

David Busch's books on Nikon cautions against lens calibration. It is only good for one distance (regardless of what you see here) and most of the time you do it wrong and your worse off than before.
I enlarge to 20X30 prints and have never fine tuned any of my more than 20 auto focus Nikon lenses.
Unless you shoot wide open with a fast 1.4 lens I suggest you leave things alone.

Funny there are two schools of thought and I specifically ask for people who use the programs. How's this?I read Steve Perry's book and it says adjustment may be needed to attain best results. Lol. Now you understand why I only wanted replies from people using the software. Nikon didn't put the time and effort and money into the cameras to include an adjustment program unless it could be needed at times. I am a gem cutter and a perfectionist. MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT. I deal in tens of a thousandth of an inch everyday. I'm pretty sure I can adjust a lens that the factory spent tons of money providing me the tools to do so. I may agree the majority of people may have no need for the best they can get and are happy. Great for them. If a person is happy and it doesn't hurt anyone I'm fully supportive. I prefere to use all the tools Nikon in this case gave me to achieve the best my equipment can produce. Also with the Sigma dock one can program 16 different adjustments at different distances for a single zoom so my choice is to adjust. Makes me happy. Your choice is not to adjust makes you happy. Good day.

I have tried both tools plus the Sigma dock. FoCal beats them all and I noticed increased sharpness. I opted out of the pro version because it offered nothing I thought I needed.
