Way before the invention of the sextant*, farmers and sailors knew that the sun peaked in elevation at the middle of the day and that each day that position climbed in the sky in the first half of the year and sank in the second half of the year.
* I had to look it up but the date that most agree on is 1759 and the inventor John Bird.

Good project! We go to Poipu Beach Kauai almost every year, but always in the summer. We were there in December of 2019 and were pleasantly surprised at how much the position of the sun had changed from July/August to December. Rather than being over the mountains, it was just over the ocean.
