How about a 60 macro. It is very sharp & can be used for portraits too. It is the first macro I ever had & is really nice on a crop camera. Bab

hi guys...and girls, i have a 450d and the kit lens 18/55, i also have a 75/300 f4-5.6, and a 50mm f 1.8, i am wondering which lens i should go for next, i dont have a huge budget but would be interested in what people think my next lens should be
thanks
Bill

if you do not do lots of low light, then I would kill the kit lens and get the 24-105mm f4 L for my walk around lens. Not cheap ($950.00 new) but worth every penny imo. Look for used to keep cost down.

A macro would be a good addition too but your walk around lens takes most of your photos and I would want great glass for that.

Buy the most lens for your money and stay with canon. Buy one of the pro L series lenses in the focal length that suits your needs.

I am having a simular problem. I am wanting to get into some Macro. My camera is a Canon 50D, and I'm very happy with this body. I use a Tamron 18-270mm for my walk around lens, it fits the bill perfectly for a all around lens. I looked at the array of 90mm-105mm lenses from all the different manufactures, and decided to wait until Tamron starts to market the newly designed 90mm f2.8 Macro with vibration control, or IS. It will be out in a few weeks, and should be priced between the Canon 100mm L lens and the old model Tamron 90mm, about $700-$800. So, my advice is to wait until you can see the entire field of lenses, and them make the best decision of which to buy.

As you progress in your hobby, different needs arise. As I got more & more into image quality,I wanted different lenses & different cameras. All around lenses are convenient, but don't give the same image quality as smaller range zooms or primes. I started with a rebel & I now have 7D & a 5Diii. I now have a 100L is macro, but the 60 is a great little lens for macro & portrait. I am keeping my 7D for distant wildlife & birds, but will probably sell my 17-55 as I use the 5D for everything else. I also will probably sell my 70-200 4is because I have a new 70-200 2.8is ii. I am a firm believer in buying the best that you can afford for now & enjoying it until you are ready & financially able to move on. I think that the image quality of the 60 or 17-55 would open up a new world of photography for you. What ever you decide enjoy. Bab

How about just picking up one of Canons famed prime "nifty fifties" for about $100 such as this one ...

That would depend on what you like to shoot.

thanks for the reply, i dont have any particular dislikes i like to shoot just about anything really, i guess if i had to pick a subject it would be portraits but i really do just take anything, so all suggestions would be helpful.
thanks again
Bill
If you're looking for a nice portrait lens and walk around lens the 24-70 2.8 would be an excellent choice. BUT before you go out and spend a mint on L glass look at Tamron's 24-70, 2.8. Go to a site and compare the two lens side by side and you'll be in for a surprise. Go with the Tamron (which isn't cheap) and you'll have some cash in your pocket with excellent picture quality.......

I bought the 10 - 22 efs lens and I just love it ...gives you something that you don't already have covered.
