Shot with a canon t3i using a Sigma DG 120-400 4.5-5.6 APO. I would and if memore serves me correct. Out at 400 mm, f8 or 9 iso400 and 1/400 . On a tripod with the lens stabilizer set to 1. (Which is contrary to manufacturer instructions but seems to work)
The real secret sauce in this image,,,,,, I got lucky.

You did a great job and very impressed with the lens, too. I thought you had a
prime lens to get that sharpness. I have Nikon gear and have read the same recommendations for VR on that too - I cannot tell the difference. I really like that photo - congrats!

We have a breeding pair of what I believe are Swainson's hawks that return to a tree on the next street over. Their nest is too high and too well concealed to get a nice shot like yours but I keep trying. Love 'em.

Primes are great but many are very expensive. Im a.low budget photo nut.

I read about or saw a vid of a photographer who put up a 30' section of scaffolding to take pictures of a nestion Oriole. Now thats dedicated.
But... its a cool idea. 😉
