Do those Ghillie suits work with animals or only human?

Camouflage does indeed work well with animals. When I was 16 years old and hunting deer I dressed completely in camouflage except for my face. With a shotgun across my knees I sat completely still at the bottom of a tree waiting for a buck to walk into range. While sitting there a gray squirrel began looking for food near me. He kept coming closer and closer until he finally jumped up on my foot and then proceeded to walk up my leg until he got to my waist area. It wasn't until I quietly said, Good Morning, that he got the memo I was not a log or part of the tree and scampered off.

Many years ago I stopped my truck on a fire lane in Fort Bragg, got out and loaded my shotgun to do some hunting. A voice, close by, asked me to please not shoot in their direction and I drove to another area to hunt...went back the next day and could NOT find where they had been laid up. And I consider myself pretty good at that kind of stuff from laying ambushes and sneak and peeks and so on.

Camouflage does indeed work well with animals. Wh... (show quote)

Good to know! I know that the camouflage does work with my eye sight and I know it's difficult to recognize that is a person in camouflage. I was thinking the animals may have other sense like smell and know that is not a bush.

I wear one when in a wooded area and I'm trying to photograph wildlife. Other than that I don't see much use for one. I have deer walk very close to me while wearing one. However you still need to limit your movements. If you can't remain still. I think a blind works better.

Camo coverings can be purchased to throw over limbs to create a hide. I surprised a flock of turkeys once when I turned to see where the noise came from.

Does anyone on UHH use one of these on a regular basis and if so any pros/cons? Thanks

It's on my shopping list. I will get one soon. Here is a link to someone who does.

Some of the pictures here were taken at retriever hunt tests where you can't distract the dog from his job.

A guy in one of these moved and terrified my horse when I was trail riding.

Take a good look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTRsI62wuZo

I use it all the time, and I love it!

You might look at Cabela/BassPro https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/redhead-3d-evolution-bug-jacket-for-men it's "3D" camo for a lightweight alternative. With a matching hat, it can really break up an outline.
In my experience picking a good spot and sitting very still, long enough for the animals to get used to you, is the most effective camouflage. You can't chase a wild animal; you have to let it come to you.

Of course animals use smell, sight and hearing to detect danger. But movement is a big indicator of danger. I have had deer and elk look right at me in the woods from 30 yards. The wind was in my favor, I was quiet, wearing a bright orange jacket but didn’t move. They perceived no threat. I did not want to kill them so they walked off.

I'm on board with the camo clothes. Another nugget of advise, wash clothes and your body with a no scent soap.
When I'm bowhunting, nothing [besides movement] will get me busted faster than my scent. Someone mentioned staying down wind which is great advise.

A bit over the top for me. Wildlife are use to seeing people in state and national forests and as long as they are not being hunted tend to ignore us as long as we don’t move too fast or try and get too close. I know some recommend camo and I have a pop up camo blind for birding, but wonder what people would think when I was walking the paths to or from a favorite spot to shoot or going back to the parking lot.

I think tis is true-the critters we see everyday see us too! Staying still, not making a bunch of noise and fuss and bother will generally be good enough.

I recall in a photography class one time the instructor (who is a great wildlife photographer) talked about wearing camouflage. He said the main reason he might use it has nothing to do with the animals. They know he is there. It is to stay hidden from other humans. Too often he has spent hours slowly moving towards an animal, being careful not to spook it, and just as he is almost in position to get the shot he wants, some moron walks up, crashing through the landscape, and yells "What y'all looking at?". To which the answer is "nothing, now, thanks".

I would advise using NOTHING but orange during hunting season...and that's only if you really, really, HAVE to risk your life for a photo.
