I gave my Kiev 88 total kit to an ex gf;s new boyfriend for his kid. He loves it.
It didn't really say Nikon is quitting- it's just moving.
Japan got too expensive. China is having "issues". Thailand works for everybody.
The food is great and the health care is affordable.
When industries consolidate it usually results in 3 main players - the premium brand, the low cost brand, and one whose product is fits in between those two.
Or a continuation by other means.

And the loss of jobs in Japan. The same strategy as followed by Canadian and US manufacturers. Short term gain long term pain

I don't see how this portends anything at all. Maybe just a smart move to consolidate their production.
The Z6 & Z7 already being made there.

To: Each and everyone on the thread...
Nations, people, and leaders need to learn that .....
... "Business is Business"
... AKA: Business 101 - Theory of Supply and Demand
First, the entity will attempt to 'adjust' changing 'sales price' or 'cost factors'
.. But ultimately, when the 'profit margin' is squeezed out, the business either dies or move elsewhere (if it can)
One only has to look around at our world today and notice what the big business and big money makers are doing exactly the same thing as... You can see it on the news and read it every day on the internet...
I will mention no names of people or names of businesses (for some would say this is political), you only have to look around you and read the stories in the news every day... At some point, leaders must wake up.
DONE... I will now 'step down' from my 'nonpolitical soap-box' -- LOL
............. AND, yes, there are OP with other opinions... AND, that is "OK" ha, ha, ha
Cheers

Many companies have moved production offshore - this is a means of staying in business (reducing expense). I see it as a good move!
Hey Folks,
I have 3 Nikon DSLRs manufactured in Thailand (D7100, D750 & D850). All outstanding. Why pay Japanese sky high wages 🤑🤑🤑 when the Thais will do the job for much less?
Cheers, Don

Over the last 5 years, Nikon has lost around 8 billion dollars.
Cameras are a shrinking market.
Canon and Sony are growing in that shrinking market...Nikon...isn't.
There is a certain inevitability being played out.

Having read so many of your posts, I find your obsession with Nikon curious.
Your avatar implies that your preferred manufacturer is Canon, although you state you own non-Canon gear.
Did Nikon wrong you in the past? You seem unable to resist pouncing on the littlest tidbit of negativity. And you regularly chide those who disagree with you.
Whatever it was, let it go. People might take you more seriously.

More likely Vietnam. Cheaper.
My OLY kit lenses are from Vietnam are OK.

I hate Canon cameras but if I need a new one I would have to buy a Canon. Canon is the only one that still makes large number of their cameras in Japan.
I could be wrong but I thought Fuji was still made in Japan?
