Horrors. Absolute horrors. Look at all of the Japanese cars now manufactured in the US. Some in former GM plants. By companies that are thriving. Including Toyota. Some in shiny, brand new plants. Double horrors! Even some European lines...like BMW and Volkswagen. The world must be ending...

I hate Canon and love Nikon but I don't think you're the enemy. I guess I won't be buying any new Nikon.

I wish I could get all emotional about photo gear. Maybe some sensitivity therapy would help. Then I can leap to the defense whenever some opposing fanboi disses my brand, and I’d tell all the noobies to buy what I use or else face public shame and endless ridicule.

Maybe I can get a new username with my camera’s brand woven into it. And get a new avatar showing me looking real doofy brandishing my weaponry.

But then reality bites and I realize that megamegapixels are waaaay cheaper than therapy .....

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health and the brand of camera you shoot.

Ooooooh, how I long to believe that. And I appreciate you are trying to help, but I know now that change must come from within, and that 12 steps is just one less than the gallows.

I've seen you jump into threads about Nikon cameras numerous times. Every time, it's clear that you don't know anything about Nikon products. Nikon built its first plant in Thailand in 1991. Many products have been manufactured there. It's nothing new. All of my Nikon cameras and lenses were manufactured in Thailand except for one - the 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 which was manufactured in Japan.

It's hard to have good luck when a competitor makes your sensors.

This is the key point. Interchangeable-lens cameras are a luxury item, in no way necessary for 'serious' photography. If you have a choice between only a $1000 smartphone and $1000 camera (no lens), what's the obvious and only choice to be made?

There will remain a place for high-end equipment, especially for specialized needs like sports, red carpets, and similar. How many vendors will be needed? Probably less than exist in December 2020.

Even still photography is going to have its issues. On TV today, a company in Denver, Colorado is specializing in making, modifying, and teaching how to use drones and taking both videos and stills out of those videos that an "in place" camera cannot possibly take. Your statement about "a place for high-end equipment, especially for specialized needs" may not even be the still cameras and lenses of today. I know there are several companies working on making a flat "lense" (not a "pancake lense"; the lens is nothing but a flat panel).

I hate when these threads turn into an unpleasant exchange, especially when it is NOT about the finer points of photography but rather about peripheral matters such as where stuff is manufactured or trends in the retail sales of cameras, etc.

Gear is important to me because I earn my living with it but frankly, as long as it works, addresses my needs and requirements, and remains intact and in working order for a reasonable lengh of time under daily professional usage, I couldn't care less if we're made in Africa by the Ants.

In the corporate world, companies and bought and sold every day. Large "umbrella" companies gobble up smaller companies. A decision is made that enhances bottom lines and oftentimes the customer or end-user is not considered. Sometimes the changes in corporate structures and manufacturing venues or internal technological methodologies have no impact on the product- there may even be improvements.

Like it or not, we live in a global economy. Stuff is made everywhere and oftentimes the lowest bidder in the labour market gets the contract.

Last week, I installed a massive audio-visual set up in a corporate conference room for one of my commercial/industrial clients. The $4,000 audio amplifier is designed in the U.S. for a Japanese company and made in China. The Samsung 57" TV was made in India. The 12 speaker systems are for Canada. The sub-woofers were designed in Germany and made in China. The picture quality was superb and the surround-sound system was like attending a concert at a state of the art auditorium.

Don't fight- be nice- stay safe and well and enjoy the spirit of the season!

Kind of racist--implies that the Thais cannot make things up to the standards of the Japanese. Wasn't too long ago that "Made in Japan" meant cheap and crappy, and the same goes for "Made in China", except that now Japan and China both have the ability to manufacture high technology better than the USA. With good QC there is no reason that the Thais cannot make cameras of the same quality as those made in Japan, and at a fraction of the cost.

Nikon's been making bodies in Thailand for years.
Now, for the reasons - the cost of living in Japan is 300% higher than the US - so in an effort to deliver the quality goods they have always done, and now that Thailand has gotten it's act together - they are confident that there will be no negative impact - other than from the occasional Canon shooter that sees this as a bad omen -
I prefer Nikon products which is a personal choice. But I certainly don't cheer for the demise of any other brand. Thanks for your view Gene!

Maybe kiev will make knockoff Nikons that will sell for 1/4 the price as they did with Hasselblads . 1/100 the quality though .

I still have a pair of Kiev 60s. Sadly they've become bookshelf queens.
I gave my Kiev 88 total kit to an ex gf;s new boyfriend for his kid. He loves it.

It didn't really say Nikon is quitting- it's just moving.
Japan got too expensive. China is having "issues". Thailand works for everybody.
