This is a long post but I will try to make it short. I have a Tamron 150-600 lens that needed some adjustment with the auto focus. I called Tamron USA and she told me everything I needed to do. When I ask how to ship it, she said they use Fed Ex. I thought that was ok because I feel like UPS uses most everything for a football. I took it to my local Fed Ex Office, purchased a box and bubble wrap. When I asked the counter rep to borrow tape and scissors, He said "Oh no! I have the perfect safest way to send it". He proceeded to open packages and wrapped it in molded foam. I was a little worried about that because of the heat it gives off. But he assured me it was fine, and "nothing was going to get to this lens". I purchased $1100.00 insurance and paid extra for fragile. About a week later I received an acknowledgement from Tamron and the words " Evidence of Shock Damage" and "Broken External Parts" grabbed my eye. I immediately called Tamron USA and the young lady told me the box was crushed and should never send in molded foam. They kept the box for evidence and a note on the acknowledgement said "Please note Lens was damaged by insufficient packing". I had left the UV filter on it and it was also shattered. Tamron assessed the damage at $278.00 to fix which of course I told them to do it. I want my lens back! It's bird season in the RGV!. I have filed a claim on 12/3 and have not heard anything yet. My question is should I make them pay for the lens and filter or settle for the amount it takes to fix it? Comments please. Again sorry for the lengthy post.

Having FedEx reimburse you for the amount Ir will take to repair the lens is a stretch. You can go to small claims court. You can file a claim against FedEx and the clerk. You will need the broken lens and/or a report of the damage to the lens, and the crushed box. You can plead your case and hope the judge finds in your favor. Getting the clerk to admit he/she suggested to use the molded container may not happen. It is easier to say, “I never told you to do that.”
I do wish the insurance will cover the damage or you get a new lens. I understand the desire to go bird shooting with the right lens. Besides I had purchased a similar lens to do same. That is a large lens and quite substantial in cost and it’s value. I understand how you feel and empathize with you. If the shooting of the birds was for a client, you could rent the lens, do the photo shoot and add the cost of the rental to your claim in court.

Isn't that what insurance is for?

Insurance is a good idea. But, why should it be necessary to pay extra to cover the incompetence of employees & corporations?

We all have our favorites, don't we! I use either USPS, or more generally UPS. My UPS driver knows me, I periodically buy him coffee, he feeds my dog cookies, and it has been a good relationship for 25 years. My local FedEx generally can't find my house, or leaves it at the neighbors!

Stopping by the local coffee shop when you see your driver there, and buying a coffee, is better than buying insurance, for me!

We have the same experience at my house, same UPS driver for many, many years, first name basis, if not home he hides the large packages in a safe place, or brings them from the road, opens gate and brings to porch, closes gate behind him (a 200' walk). USPS nearly the same, same carrier for 18 yrs., nice lady, lives near us..... new one now, and he also does good. Fed-ex is always OK, never seem to get the same driver, but stuff get's here, Amazon does OK, considering it seems like never the same driver more than two or three times, two lost items - fairly pricey - delivered somewhere else/or grabbed by "porch pirates" (but Amazon did make it right each time, nearly immediately) then there is Lasership....... I wish I had something good to say about them....I warn vendors not to use them, packages going thru them seem to go to the "roach motel system", as in the packages get "checked in" but never seem to get here without some sort of drama over days or week or two...wrong house, no updates, never show up, yadda yadda (the local Orlando Channel 9 TV even did several stories via their "Viewer assistance stories", nothing good was said or shown).

With camera gear (actually anything I ship) I always overpack the item, soft foam/bubble wrap, stout carton, works well. If I buy something from an individual, I always ask them to overpack it, I'll pay a couple dollars extra rather than have to mess with damaged goods..... and if of any value, Insurance!

Nowadays many companies hire kids and don’t train them. That is what happens now. When was the last time you went to McDonald’s and after three tries they go you order straight.

Good luck with that. It seems like an open and shut case, but you never know. FedEx isn't my favorite shipper.

I use only the USPS, my items are insured if need be? I use only bubble wrap & schredded paper as i have a schredder that is very good. The trkg # on the receipt is given to the USPS 4 trkg to if & when my box has arrived?

I ordered an item from MPB that was to have been delivered Saturday by Fed EX to my apartment. I live in a gated community. Fedex on the website said it was delivered at 7:30 pm. I do not have it, nor does our complex office have it, which closed at 5:00 pm on Saturday.

I have shipped items with FedEx without index. I won't judge them on one event.

All the above reply.
One thing to do is to visit that FedEx store again and speak directly to the manager, describe the situation in detail, show him the photos of the damage, and explain how his employee is the root cause and he insisted he could pack it better. Then ask him to initiate the insurance claim or at least see that it gets done.

In the mean time, listen to others. The repair depot will make it like new. Be happy.

While this is certainly a valid case of a terrible choice by the employee, consider the times. With this plague and so many people staying or working at home, ALL these delivery people are strained to the max. Add to that "porch pirates" and is is amazing things aren't worse.

They will probably only reimburse you for what you have a receipt for.

On another fedex related incident, I came out to find 2 boxes in the bed of my truck. I was puzzled. After closer inspection, it was a fedex delivery, but not for me. I went and reviewed my security footage. Sure enough, the fedex guy put the boxes in the back of my truck.
I called fedex to come pick them up. They said , sorry, the shipment could not be redelivered. I asked what kind of operation were they running? A delivery put in the back of my truck, wrong address delivery and they won’t come and get them?
Finally she said she would put a note in the system but would not guarantee someone would come get the boxes. 2 days later, still no pickup. I finally delivered myself.

I’ve had both good and bad experiences. The bad: delivered my Nikon 600mm f/4 to a neighbors house. Didn’t look at the shipping label and signed for it. When status said delivered, thankfully I recognized my neighbors signature and went over and got my lens. This has happened more than once. Was supposed to get my brand new Fender custom Telecaster last Thursday. Didn’t arrive. Didn’t ‘t arrive Friday either. Called Customer Svc and of course you can only get an automated response and no expected delivery date. Luckily it came Saturday. Signature was required, but they just left it at the door and took off. The good: ordered some parts from Sweetwater one Thursday afternoon and specified 2nd day air. Package got to my door next day, Friday at 9:30am. It’s a roll of the dice.

My experiences with USPS and ups, leaving things unprotected out in the rain, small envelopes left in front of door in windy weather have left me hesitant to order expensive things. I only ordered a 52" tv from Crutchfield, because they have the "white glove" service. I knew exactly when it was coming. I NEVER would have ordered my Les Paul Classic online, besides it's fun to go play all the high end stuff in the store!

Due to the Pandemic, more and more items are being ordered and shipped. FedX and UPS has started sub contracting their the deliveries to...... shudder. The US Post Office. Where Fed X and UPS would put a package on my porch, ring the bell and go. The PO just put's things on the porch, without ringing a bell. That's on a good day. Some times the USPO can't even figure out what that big concrete slap at my front door is (It's a porch). I may actually find a package on the side walk.

If you have not filed a claim with Federal express as they packed it and they offered the insurance. You may have to be persistent. I shipped a mirror and got insurance once and UPS broke it. They delivered it back broken and paid the cost of the mirror. I repackaged it again with a new mirror and they broke that and paid the cost, finally, i had the family member buy one. I have had issues with UPS, USPS, Fed Express and others; stuff happens and the past ten years document who you talk to name, number and time and keep working up the chain. Try writing on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/FedEx/ No company wants bad press. Try asking nicely and keep going until you get an answer you need.
