This is a long post but I will try to make it short. I have a Tamron 150-600 lens that needed some adjustment with the auto focus. I called Tamron USA and she told me everything I needed to do. When I ask how to ship it, she said they use Fed Ex. I thought that was ok because I feel like UPS uses most everything for a football. I took it to my local Fed Ex Office, purchased a box and bubble wrap. When I asked the counter rep to borrow tape and scissors, He said "Oh no! I have the perfect safest way to send it". He proceeded to open packages and wrapped it in molded foam. I was a little worried about that because of the heat it gives off. But he assured me it was fine, and "nothing was going to get to this lens". I purchased $1100.00 insurance and paid extra for fragile. About a week later I received an acknowledgement from Tamron and the words " Evidence of Shock Damage" and "Broken External Parts" grabbed my eye. I immediately called Tamron USA and the young lady told me the box was crushed and should never send in molded foam. They kept the box for evidence and a note on the acknowledgement said "Please note Lens was damaged by insufficient packing". I had left the UV filter on it and it was also shattered. Tamron assessed the damage at $278.00 to fix which of course I told them to do it. I want my lens back! It's bird season in the RGV!. I have filed a claim on 12/3 and have not heard anything yet. My question is should I make them pay for the lens and filter or settle for the amount it takes to fix it? Comments please. Again sorry for the lengthy post.

Cost of repair and your initial shipping charges.
Why would they pay for the lens cost? Unless you want it replaced with a new one.

The liability for Fedex should be the Cost of repair and your initial shipping charges.

I got an email with a FedEx tracking number for my King Arthur brotforms to arrive Sunday. They actually arrived Saturday. My sourdough is rising tonight for baking tomorrow. I'm happy with FedEx.

That was you? King Arthur is now out of stock on the brotforms! But my popover pan and vital wheat gluten did also arrive a day early. I also have never had any issue with FedEx.

I’ve had both good and bad experiences. The bad: delivered my Nikon 600mm f/4 to a neighbors house. Didn’t look at the shipping label and signed for it. When status said delivered, thankfully I recognized my neighbors signature and went over and got my lens. This has happened more than once. Was supposed to get my brand new Fender custom Telecaster last Thursday. Didn’t arrive. Didn’t ‘t arrive Friday either. Called Customer Svc and of course you can only get an automated response and no expected delivery date. Luckily it came Saturday. Signature was required, but they just left it at the door and took off. The good: ordered some parts from Sweetwater one Thursday afternoon and specified 2nd day air. Package got to my door next day, Friday at 9:30am. It’s a roll of the dice.

Shoulda tried harder.

Titles like this always crack me up. Never use Fed Ex again!

Something about FedEx:

"Behind it all are our more than 490,000 team members around the world, who are united around the Purple Promise: “I will make every FedEx experience outstanding.”

One person screwed up. By now he's probably working for UPS.

Seriously, I hope it all works out. Since you bought insurance I can't figure how it couldn't.

You did purchase $1100.00 worth of insurance on the lens.

For boxes to be shipped, I always prepare them at home where I have complete control over how they are packaged, and where I always keep an ample supply of various packing materials. I really don't understand why you would choose some stranger to pack it for you, especially if you are shipping something fragile and very valuable. Just because someone works at FedEx doesn't guarantee that person is good at preparing packages for shipment. Permanently boycotting FedEx is pointless, especially if it was your fault for failing to take responsibility for your own package preparation. Besides, in the end you are only punishing yourself by limiting your future shipping options.

FedEx failed to deliver a box to the office yet showed it delivered. They produced a copy of a signature for the person the packaged was addressed to. Was not their signature and that person is not at the front of our building and never receives packages. Wrangling continued for two weeks with FedEx trying to absolve themselves of responsibility. Our address is on a NE street, our UPS driver (the same one we've had for nearly 20 years) discovered the package at an address 4 blocks away on the NW side.

FedEx delivered two boxes of paper goods to our closed business leaving the boxes in the open on the outside of our closed gates. Fortunately I had been checking the order status and made a quick run to the office.

I can go on and on about our FedEx debacles. We actually have a huge distribution facility here and know some folks that work there part time. What stories they tell.

Happy shooting

Isn't that what insurance is for?

I have dealt with USPS, UPS, and FedEx. And have had at least one problem with each of them in past years. I ordered my very first item from Amazon last month, and received it 2 days earlier than the projected delivery date. B&H, my favorite camera shop, never delivered a package to my residence so quickly. I had FedEx pack a box for me last year, to go from California to Wisconsin. I paid surface shipping fees, plus insurance. It arrived as promised, and safely. I hope your problem will be taken care of, to your satisfaction.

Beyond the insurance issue, I think it is obvious that FedEx packed it for you. I don’t know anyone who owns foam packing equipment, however that works.

The worst part becomes your word against theirs that they offered to do the packing...but the materials used are kind of self evident.

At a minimum, I would request the cost of the repair from the damages caused by an employee of Fed Ex. I would also ask for the cost of shipping but I would not hold my breath on that part.
And, a word to the wise, Fed Ex is excellent, I ALWAYS pack my own boxes. Lesson learned.
You had an employee of Fed Ex that messed up, shit happens, do not take it out on an excellent company that for the most part does excellent work.

I would think your receipt would show charges for packaging, they don't do it for free here. I too refuse to use them. Too many problems with them here but sometimes I think it is one employee taking short cuts rather than a company wide problem.
