Because I like dogs. All animals and nature but mostly dogs. I've done dog grooming and dog training and studied trying to understand what makes them act the ways they do. I enjoy the challenge of trying to show their character in a photograph. To many people their dog is a big part of the family. Sad thing is they don't live so long. If I could just take a picture showing their pets character its more than just a picture of an animal. And I get a little memory to. I'm no expert but I enjoy trying.

family records as I am the family historian. Documentation as I am a fire department photographer so my photos for the department are used in a wide variety of things that can help in many ways to either help people or help prove a case if needed. I also take photos for fun.

I think this sums it up for me. "A picture is but a moment ,frozen in time, that has never been seen before, and shall never be seen again" Emerson...I live by this, so, capturing that moment and preserving it for all is my mission in life.[/quote]

The quote from Emerson echos through my mind almost every time I take a photograph. There are so many reasons I love photography and most of them have already been stated. But as time passes the love I have for photography grows even stronger and gives me more determination to leave a photographic legacy for my children and grandchildren.

Because I can't draw, and my trumpet was too loud to practice in an apartment.

There are no bad reasons to take photographs provided
(as it is with everything) you are not doing it to do harm.

I do it because it helps me to see things that I might have overlooked otherwise.
Through the viewfinder I see the beauty in a spider or a plant. I see the ever changing sky and sea and the strength, beauty and character in human faces of all ages. These are only a few of my reasons. My only regret is that I'm not better at it but I am learning and that is also good reason to do it. I would add that another good reason is the people you encounter. Here at UHH I have learned a lot and enjoy your exchanges. So thanks to all of you even though you don't always agree with each other.
Bill

HAHAHA this struck me as funny, but only because I went to a camera show today and I'm realizing that this is not a very inexpensive hobby.

Hey Doc ..... it doesn't have to be expensive if you have self control .....

My last two children (set of twins) are turning 18 soon. About 20 years ago I began putting snapshots into albums in a chronological order. I have scrapped over 30 books (heritage, one for each of my four children, travel/vacations), these were snapshots of all our holidays and fun times. Now that my twins are going to be leaving the nest, about a year ago I started seriously learning how to go from snapshots to photographs and I have really enjoyed filling my time now and trying to not feel the empty nest syndrome as they twins are busy with their last year of school and friends. I want to stop time and capture each of these moments so when Bob and I are sitting on our front porch swing looking at our photographs I can see how my children evolved from little babies into adulthood and I can see how I went from taking snapshots into now creating art with my photography. Being retired about 3 years ago had left a lot of time on my hands at 46..I really started this as a hobby/time filler and now it is a passion/love of mine.

1. there are so many things during your life that one likes to remember and capture.
2. when taking photos of different things I am in MY own world. I'm not a very good photographer and I don't post many things on this website but again, I am in my own world and totally absorbed when getting photos. Besides my wife and my 4 legged kids, nothing else matters if for only a couple of minutes.

It's a way for me to organize and make meaning of at least the visual part of my world. And for the seconds or minutes that I'm composing the shot, until I press the shutter, all the noise and static in my head is quiet. Plus I like my photos.

To St3v3M
from rts2568

Well,. you're not going to like this but, I ask you? I liave liked doing it since childhood but that doesn't even begin to answer your question and infact, can't even begin to answer your question because the only answer possible is hidden in you: "why do YOU want to take photos?"
