I can only surmise that either the sellers are selling their gear to move to other brands or formats, or are downsizing in the current economic environment.

Just curious: If you have sold one of these premium Nikon DSLRs recently, could you share the reason? Inquiring minds want to know.

Just to head off the inevitable comments about mirrorless, the Z II models are not out of the running, but the D850 has more of what I am looking for for birding.

Have you reviewed the new Canon R5 mirrorless autofocus specifically for birding. Some claim it is the best one the market.

This thread morphed into a discussion of what I should acquire, which was not my intent. I simply asked if those who had sold their premium DSLRs would share their reason for doing so.

In retrospect, the question was flawed. First, it assumed that the plethora of used D850s that I am seeing is higher than “normal,” but I had no real basis for knowing what the normal level should be. Secondly, the obvious rationale of people selling due to economic necessity is hard to judge from a forum comprised of current owners.

Thank you to the folks who responded to the question that I asked. Those who have opinions and suggestions on how to spend my money can hold their fire. I enjoyed the discussion, but I am aware of the issues and options.

Happy Holidays to all.

Rumours has it that Nikon would introduce the D880 and D580 early next year. Perhaps that's the reason why

Rumor also has it that the new cameras will be preloaded with digital models of all species of birds and mammals, so that all you’ll need is a barely recognizable image and then AI will recognize it and make it perfectly perfect.

Interesting. With the D5, D850, and D500, with their newer separate focusing system, and using Group Auto Focus, I have a keep rate on moving birds of 99%. Didn't know the R5 delivered 100%. Wow.

Uhm I don't shoot birds or animals.

Same here. Not ordering one. Maybe it’s like an f:0.95 lens ... comforting to feel well prepped for the unexpected.

Have purchased a D850 via eBay....no problems. Look for low clicks, do your comparisons for price and mostly don’t be in a hurry! Lost about a dozen bids before I got my price...worth the wait. Been two years and never had a problem.

Sold my D500 and a D7100 to put enough money aside to aid in buying a Z6 II. Haven't pulled the trigger yet because I haven't seen enough comments about the Z6 II with the battery grip to convince me that it's worth replacing my D500 for sports photography. Might have made a mistake selling it. BTW - I love my D810 with a battery grip and use it all the time for portraits and landscape.

I'am seriously considering selling or trading in my D750 and my D500 towards the purchase of a D850, and mind you, I still have a D5. With cropping a D850 to DX you really have the best of both worlds, in that, a crop in a D850 still gives you enough megapixels as the D500. Everything is covered when I whip out my D5. So I will be doing this next week. I just feel that it will be a better move to go for the maximum potential that you get with the D850. And here is the but, I know that I can go 10-11 FPS without worrying about the buffer, but I'am finding out that 7-8 FPS is sufficient enough to get a hit with Wildlife shots and I use my D5 for sports and other types of shots. Good Luck because this ? of yours really gets one to think.

I'am not hearing much about the D880, as there will not be many changes from the D850 or D580. Right now, from very credible sources, I can say that this is a 50/50 shot.

Seems like the D850 is on back order everywhere I have looked. I wonder why? Good luck with your decision.

Low demand has decreased production.

I recently asked a camera shop owner why he had so much used gear to sell. He said in most cases people needed the money. We are still in the middle of a pandemic and a lot of people are hurting, so my guess is this is still probably the largest reason people sell their gear. Add the new mirrorless technology to the mix for more turmoil.

I saw Sony in the lead with mirrorless a year ago, now Canon is in the lead with the R5 and unbelievable glass (who would of thought you could buy 600 and 800mm primes for under $1000). Nikon's Z7 II looks promising. I wonder how many who moved to Sony A7RIV are now envious of the R5? Of course, they wouldn't admit it.

I use a D500 for wildlife / birding and a D850 for everything else with a lot more $$ invested in Nikon glass than in 4 the Nikon bodies I own. It is a big emotional and economic decision to sell all your equipment and move to a different manufacturer's system so I am going slow and let the market settle first.

I want the name of the camera shop that has a nikkor 800mm prime for under $1000. because I'm buying that lens right now.

That doesn’t matter unless your real fascination with “photography” is just about fully mastering complex devices.

As an extremely capable photographer I have little to no use for, nor interest in, at least half the stuff built into my cameras. OTOH I do give serious consideration to new gear that offers a noticeable upgrade to the aspects that I actually use.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

For instance I’m not especially drawn to two clearly verrrrrry popular upgrades:
1. Ever more amazing AF performance.
2. Ever higher pixel counts.
Yet I certainly DO crop images and I have been using AF since 1987.

For my needs, show me significantly improved high ISO “night vision” and I’m interested. Same for workable flicker reduction and also for any real advances in IBIS.

Mastering every function of modern multifunction cameras is just a geekish hobby for gearheads. Mastering your craft where it applies to the type of images that interest you will always leave you wanting more from SOME of the functions of your camera, and will always find you ignoring various other functions that do not serve your approach to photography.

If you're looking for superior low light, high ISO performance you should consider the Nikon D4s. I have a D500 and a D850 but I recently purchased a D4s and I'm blown away at that camera's high ISO performance.
