I have a D500 and a D810, and I am considering the purchase of a D850 (new or used TBD). Because of this, I have been keeping my eye on eBay. I have been surprised at what seems to be the large number of D850s and D500s that are being offered for sale. I can only surmise that either the sellers are selling their gear to move to other brands or formats, or are downsizing in the current economic environment.
Just curious: If you have sold one of these premium Nikon DSLRs recently, could you share the reason? Inquiring minds want to know.
Just to head off the inevitable comments about mirrorless, the Z II models are not out of the running, but the D850 has more of what I am looking for for birding.
Have a happy Thanksgiving to all Hoggers, and stay safe and well.

The D850 is an incredible, incredible machine; the evolutionary pinnacle of the DSLR. Look at KEH.com to sell your gear and purchase a new D850. One of Tony Northrop's YouTube videos has a selling or purchasing discount code for KEH.

I received my new Z 6II two hours ago (haven't played with it yet). Since I ordered it I've read good and bad about it so I'll be hanging on to my D5500, D500, and D750 for a while, until I'm sure. I purchased an FTZ adapter so that I can use all of my Nikon glass. I read that the eye focus is not that good. Any Z 6II users that can confirm or deny this? I don't have a D850 but I've heard that they are a pretty spectacular camera.
Seems like the D850 is on back order everywhere I have looked. I wonder why? Good luck with your decision.

Clark here is a link to a post I created about the D850, 10 pages about 99.7% positive about the D850.

I have all three of the cameras that you reference in your post and would never sell any of them, unless maybe it came to a choice between the cameras and eating. I've looked pretty hard at a couple of newer options and see no reason to change, and given the deals in today's Nikon Black Friday offering, don't believe now is strategically a good time to sell. (Be sure to check prices on new D500s and D850s before buying anything used from anywhere right now.)
My personal opinion is that a lot of folks who are selling those two models are making rash, emotional decisions that they may regret later. By the way...you don't say what your plan would be for your D810, but my suggestion is to hold on to it for its quiet shutter. I know its controls are a little different from the others, but I'd still keep it because its imaging capabilities are very little different from the D850.
These are outstanding cameras. Economically, this just may not be a good time to sell, regardless of what might make operational sense.
First of all, nikon reduced the price on new 850s by $500. So they are sold out at most retail outlets. Second, and likely related, the rumor mills are starting to crank out news of a d850 replacement body in the Spring.
Truly a most amazing tribute. I enjoyed following that thread as it grew and grew.
I have no personal feelings up or down about the 850 but I still got somewhat of an emotional high as 10 pages of posts steadily accumulated, all expressing how really overjoyed the 850 users are. Made me **ALMOST** wanna get me one :-)
I read the thread with great interest, which made the number of D850s up for sale something of a surprise.

In a few weeks many things will begin to begin again. Keep watch.
It could be that, after buying the D850, some people finally realized that it wasn't the camera that made their photos look bad...

Interesting, I find a lot of ALL brands for sale on Ebay. It is one of the best places to get more money in your pocket than trading it in. Again, there are a lot of all brands for sale on ebay. You can draw no conclusive conclusions from it.

You may want to seriously compare the Z7 II to D850. They're not identical, but both great tools. I can truthfully say, my D500 has ridden the pine quite awhile since firmware update 3.0 of my Z's. And I love that camera. But the Z6 has held up well shooting sports. Have not shot much wildlife lately, but might consider adding a used D4s or D5 for that field. All in all, my next decision is to possibly sell the D500 and Z6 to upgrade to Z6 II. Deeper buffer, better AF system and slightly faster FPS. Selling the two will cover most of the cost of a new Z6 II.
btw, I have (thankfully) not had the virus, but 6 or 7 family members have suffered the hardship. They have assured me it is ok to go on with my life anyway. Buying, selling, trading helps keep the economy going.

No reason to wonder why. They put it on sale & it sold out everywhere in a couple of days, even the Nikon website says out of stock. They had some of the 500 pf lens also I believe on sale=gone!!! Best all around DSLR (WITH A MIRROR IN IT )camera ever made to date IMHO.
