I read the thread with great interest, which made the number of D850s up for sale something of a surprise.

A lot of people are upgrading to the new Sony @ Canon R5/R6 cameras & mirrorless in general. Personally I don't like buying used electronics. If I was to, it would be from one of the bigger camera stores like KEH, B&H, or Adorama with some kind of warranty. To bad you missed the sale they just had. B&H only will give you $450 for your D810 camera & are selling them for $1k & up. I own 1 & would just rather keep it for that price. If Nikon has a refurbished 1 it would probably be over $2k. Better off selling privately. A little more hassle but...

My D810 has just over 5k clicks on the shutter & is like new. It has been babied. Never out in the rain or or in the middle of winter. Heck I don't even change lens that often outside. I would have to get $1250 for it & the D850 available to make me want to get rid of it. Just curious, have you used & mastered every function on the cameras you own now?

It could be that, after buying the D850, some people finally realized that it wasn't the camera that made their photos look bad...

I have a D500 and a D810, and I am considering the purchase of a D850 (new or used TBD). Because of this, I have been keeping my eye on eBay. I have been surprised at what seems to be the large number of D850s and D500s that are being offered for sale. I can only surmise that either the sellers are selling their gear to move to other brands or formats, or are downsizing in the current economic environment.

Just curious: If you have sold one of these premium Nikon DSLRs recently, could you share the reason? Inquiring minds want to know.

Just to head off the inevitable comments about mirrorless, the Z II models are not out of the running, but the D850 has more of what I am looking for for birding.

Have a happy Thanksgiving to all Hoggers, and stay safe and well.

I have read your thread with amusement as well as interest. It is amazing some think you want to sell your D500 or D810 when I don't see anything at all in your post that mentions selling anything. I see you are interested in why other people are selling their D850's on ebay.

I think the answer is simple. This is the time of year when camera sales go up and also this year there are numerous mirrorless cameras for sale. Mirrorless cameras seem to be the new GO-TO camera that will make everyone who owns one an experienced professional photographer who cannot take a bad photograph. So there you have it; people are selling their wonderful Nikon D850 cameras to buy the newest toy in the mirrorless line.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and be WELL,

Dennis

I sold my D500 and D850 to switch to Sony, 2 years ago. Evolved through several models and have been using the A7R4 since its release. The GM lenses are outstanding.

No regrets.

I see the same abundance of Canon 5d4s on eBay. Maybe, I’m jumping to conclusions, but I figure it’s Canon and Nikon owners getting what they can before jumping to mirrorless?

I imagine it's because the D810 is getting long in tooth and the D500 is a crop sensor body that people are moving away from because of the lower prices on Mirrorless FF bodies.

Could it at least be possible that at this point in time some people just need money more than an expensive camera?

Many photographers are switching to mirrorless and I am sure that I do not need to explain why. If you are after a D850, a camera I have no experience with because I do not need 45 Mp., just go with your instincts. Impossible to go wrong from what I know about that camera.

I sold my Nikon D500 and several lenses to offset the expense of switching to a Sony a7iii and lenses. I liked the layout of the camera body of the D500 the best of any camera I ever owned and it was very easy to use and was great at high ISOs BUT the Sony has features I like better like AF, especially eye AF and the ability to see your picture BEFORE you snap the shutter, plus I went from crop sensor to full frame and ended up with a SMALLER kit.

No regrets.

Yes, they may be moving to mirrorless ......For most fast action wildlife/birds I still prefer DSLR - and yes, I do also have Sony for other stuff.

If money is no object, IMO, for fast traveling/handling ergonomic wildlife/birds, the two Nikon PF (300/500mm) lenses are optimum - used with a crop frame body ! - and I am a Canon/Sony guy !

For full frame, slower/closer action, mirrorless IS the way to go.

Seems like the D850 is on back order everywhere I have looked. I wonder why? Good luck with your decision.

I just purchased a D850 from B&H. They were sold out for a few weeks but just got some in and I have already received mine. Great camera.

I have had the Z7 for over a year and it is also a Great camera.

Yes, you interpreted my inquiry correctly. I know times are tough and many folks are offloading hobby gear for more pressing needs, but I would hate to think that all the sales I am seeing are due to hardship.

I doubt hardship. Just wanting a new mirrorless.

I recently sold some Nikon FF gear...it was great gear, but I wanted to move on into lighter, easier, smaller and much more “fun” (for me) hardware. Nikon is excellent, but not the only answer. At this point, I am enjoying an XT4 and X100F due to the pure enjoyment of the tactile dial approach they offer, their size, and most importantly, the colour rendering of the Fuji sensors. I rarely feel any need to shoot raw, yes, even paid weddings, any more. My remaining Nikon gear, it’s always raw and hours in post, but it is a bit better in really low light.

Cheers!
