You can find the 16-80mm used for $500-$600. I would NEVER pay $1000 for it.

It's a fine lens, but it's both big and heavy. I find myself using the Nikon 24-120mm lens, which isn't as fast, but is much lighter.

My question is why would you buy a lens designed for a full-frame Nikon for the D7200? You don't need all that glass, and as some others have commented, your maximum wide angle would only be 35mm. You'd probably be better off with a lens designed for your format that actually produced a 24mm view at the wide end.

I have the low cost AF-P 18-55 3.5-5.6 G kit lens on my 7200. The zoom range fits my uses well, I like the VR, and it's a nice compact size. I consider that lens a good value and it takes reasonably good photos.

I do miss more open aperatures, and I would consider something faster if the budget permits, and you don't mind something bigger. I personally wouldn't go with a lens without VR.

I had the Nikon 16-80mm f/2.8-4 lens. I was disappointed with it. It's like a $500 to $600 lens that sells for over $1000. I already had the previous 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. They seem to have lowered the quality when they went to the 16-80mm. The build quality is not as good and it has a lower quality focusing motor. The focusing motor is noisy. I returned the 16-80mm and found a camera store that still had a new 16-85mm.

I use the Nikon 16-85mm (all around) on a D7200 and find it a quality lens that would serve your purpose nicely. It gives just enough on the wide end, and is great for bringing in any subject close. For wider purpose I use a Nikon 10-24mm (astro), and for longer a Sigma 150-600mm(birding). The 1/3 crop feature of the camera also gives you options.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck in your choice and enjoy your camera.

I have 3 lenses for my D7000. But the one that is more or less always mounted is the standard kit 18-55 mm. I’ve done time lapse, panorama, wildlife, landscape, and Astro photography. For candids , I find it ideal. For quick shots the variable zoom works wonderfully. IMHO.

One reason is that the full-frame lenses, on the whole, are much better designed and executed than the DX lenses. There are a few exceptions, of course, but almost all current DX lenses are consumer grade products, including some that carry the Gold Ring designation. The ones that do happen to be "better" lenses tend to be pretty significantly overpriced.

The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non VR version will provide a wider view albeit shorter length at a very reasonable price point.

Thanks Strodav. What a dilemma, upgrade lens or body, or both. $$$$

No need to consider upgrading the camera body. You have a very well respected camera body already. It never hurts to add to your lens collection if warranted. You've done your cost/benefits analysis and you have convinced yourself that you are not suffering from GAS. Take your time doing your research and even hire the lens you think will the one to buy. That way you will see if the lens really does meet your expectations. Good luck!

Have a D7200, which came with a 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, which is actually a very good DX lens. When I needed a wider angle lens for landscapes and some astrophotography, I went with a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 DX, which is also an excellent lens. I also have the Tamron version of the lens you are looking at, a 24-70mm f/2.8 G2. It performs well on the D7200, but now you are starting to put some fairly expensive glass on a $600 body.

It’s a pretty darn good $600 body. You should never feel bad about paying more for good glass than for a body.

The best DX lens I've used is the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX. This is a rather old Nikon lens and still rather expensive for new models. Consider trying to find a used one. The only drawback is the lack of VR, but the lens and images have 'character' you don't typically find in most lenses. The various Nikon DX lens in the 18-105 to 18-200 VR range is are equally sharp, so the differences are the focal length and whether a plastic or metal mount, giving slightly different prices and ruggedness.

I've been using 18-200 VR for years. I've put it on my D80, D7100 and D500. I've heard some negative comments about this lens. Still, unless I have special need to put on my 35mm, 50mm or Tamron 150-600 G2, the 18-200 has been my go-to lens. You just mentioned it in a positive way. Do you personally have any reservations about it? Thanks.

By the way, what does GAS stand for?
