The only people that should care what anyone else buys should be stock holders in that company. They both learned to make optics from the Germans during WWII. The German teachers brought cameras to photograph their travels. They both introduced their first production camera in 1948. Each new model since then has some new feature that the other doesn't have. So, at any given time one might have the edge over the other. For most of us the decision to buy one or the other is economic. We have an inventory of one manufacturers lenses that we can't afford or can't be bothered to replace. There are some idiots in the world that think everyone should own what they own. Maybe to validate their own decision. They probably have an opinion on Fords vs Chevys too.
While Canon and Nikon have been the leaders for a long time there are now many other choices. So if you're looking for a new camera, don't ask here. You'll just get a bunch of BS. Read the reviews. fondle the hardware and make up your mind what's right for you.
Remember I said those Germans, that came to Japan to teach, brought cameras? Look at daddy and his two children by different wives.

Totally agree, not always the camera you have , the eye of the beholder and how to photograph the photo and edit if needed is the most important and professional way to show what you see and if Others can relate the experience.

For those obsessed with genealogy, Nikon's daddy was the Zeiss Ikon Contax I, with a shutter copied from the Leica.

The name of camera you choose is a personal thing you choose what suits you best, my first Canon camera was the A1 a terrific camera and the reason I chose to buy it was that it was a multimode camera and all the info was in the viewfinder, another reason was that lens was in the centre of the camera body where as Nikon from memory were slightly to one side.
I have my A1 bodies and vs lenses to a close friend who dropped one of Nikons off an over bridge and his other body packed up the following day.
I had bought a Canon 40D and four lenses a month before

Ahhhhh. you assumed...

They look like cameras to me, as well as probably 90% of the people here.

Geeze, almost everything here is authoritatively presented.
That's why so many people grab it and run. Wrong or right.

I wrote “I expect ...“, not “I assume ...“.

Please don’t substitute assumptions for expectations. I expect better of you ;-)

A $1,000 camera is a $1,000 camera a $3,000 camera is a$3,000 and so forth no matter the brand. You have to feel how comfortable the camera is in your hands and the ease of the controls. Something that buying online you can not do. 1. How much you want to spend 2.find an honest camera store in your city and handle the cameras of your choice.

Sometimes you think about these pro photographers and what they use. I believe that the camera companies supply the photogs that are using their equipment with inventory in which to use. If you watch the you tube videos they always tell you what camera and lens they are using. I see a lot of it with canon pros and sony pros. Their equipment has to be top notch. But why should it make a difference to us as casual shooters. There was one photographer who was dropped by a company. And those when it came to equipment was the first thing they talked about. I watch Nikon pros showing how they made their images, in what steps they took and how they designed the idea behind it all. Never really a mention of their equipment. Although when they do advertise new items for a company they show results that can be achieved with such equipment. They seem to be more interested in helping you achieve your goal than to be selling cameras. Watch Joe Mcnally. His videos are really very good. One could look at him as being a mentor.

Sony builds mirrorless cameras for the masses and prices them of the benefit of mankind.

With all due respect, I think it is all a specious discussion. Having been with UHH for several years now, I see every so often comments that adamantly insist that either Canon, Nikon, Leica, Sony or is the ONLY camera to have. Although I have owned Nikon equipment since 1965, I make no representation that Nikon is the ONLY camera to have. For me, the Nikon system works nicely. I have invested so much money in lenses and equipment over the years that there is no way for me to shift now. I cannot really even conceive at this point shifting to mirrorless cameras. There are obviously many, many professionals who use all of the above cameras and others as well. Since I don't make money taking pictures but, instead, just enjoy the hobby, I expect to stick with Nikon.

Cool, you assumed I can do better.
Otherwise you wouldn't expect it.
