A $1,000 camera is a $1,000 camera a $3,000 camera is a$3,000 and so forth no matter the brand. You have to feel how comfortable the camera is in your hands and the ease of the controls. Something that buying online you can not do. 1. How much you want to spend 2.find an honest camera store in your city and handle the cameras of your choice.

Or you could put your $1000 or $3000 toward moving expenses and move to a berg that has a local camera store.

You just can't win with this group.

As an amateur I used cameras from Pentax, Miranda, Leica, Nikon, Konica, Mamiya, Fuji. As a pro of over 40 years in the business I have used Leica, Nikon, Canon, Hasselblad, Sony.

For me, I use what gear serves me best for my needs and budget. The only loyalty I have is to using whatever gear helps me create the best images, what gear gives me an advantage over fellow pros, what gear helps me best service the needs of my clients, and what gear is the most fun to use personally.

Right now that is Sony, but I have made award-winning and memorable photos with all the gear I have used from my film days through digital, from rangefinder cameras, medium format cameras, SLRs, DSLRs and mirrorless.

I think it is great that we have such amazing choices now for every shooter, at every budget, at every skill and interest level. As a career photojournalist and also a longtime Photography Professor at the University level, I know that the knowledge, skill, creative vision and experience of the photographer will always matter more than the gear, which are just tools.

Be happy and use what gear you like and what gear works best for you, and always stretch yourself and your creativity, but most importantly, just have fun. Cheers

Cool, you assumed I can do better.
Otherwise you wouldn't expect it.

Not quite.

I never hesitate to expect the impossible !

Well OK, almost never ... gotta make the occasional exceptions for the exceptional.

Love it ? Steal it ! Or maybe you’re not really an artist ? One thing artists and crows have in common is ethics.

Is there anybody in this blog that can really tell what brand of camera has taken a particular photograph??

Usually quite easy if the original is attached.

For those obsessed with genealogy, Nikon's daddy was the Zeiss Ikon Contax I, with a shutter copied from the Leica.

Really ?!?!?

Show me a vintage Leica with a vertically running metal shutter.

According to Wikipedia, the Leica had the cloth shutter that was copied for the first Canon. The rest of the camera was a copy of the Contax.

Wikipedia describes the Nikon I as a copy of the Contax with the cloth shutter copied from the Leica. Who am I to argue? My first Nikon was the FTN.( I misspoke when I said Canon. I meant Nikon I of course.)

When we can no longer afford to change our camera brand, we are challenged to change ourselves.

Might be a tough pill to swallow, EXCEPT, that either brand with equivalent equipment levels can produce equivalent results. I have the brand I use because of history and familiarity - not better or worse, just different labeling.

Im sorry but I cannot understand the purpose or message that ‘nb4jee’ is laying on us. Was it only a plea for the UHH community to be more ‘universal’ and less parochial in recommending a camera? I’m going to burst the balloon. I have used only a few cameras over the years as I am satisfied with the Nikon product. There are so many cameras out there. The only difference for most of the cameras is the menu. Otherwise all of the cameras can produce basically the same image. It’s the skill of the photographer to make a great composition using the camera and their knowledge of technique and the elements of design.

Plenty of choices and I have not forgotten Pentax but I am surprised they have not introduced a mirroless camera recently. It is not Nikon or Canon, there are other choices.

Pentax executives have announced they are committed to the K-Mount, which seem to mean they will continue to manufacture DSLR only

The only people that should care what anyone else buys should be stock holders in that company. They both learned to make optics from the Germans during WWII. The German teachers brought cameras to photograph their travels. They both introduced their first production camera in 1948. Each new model since then has some new feature that the other doesn't have. So, at any given time one might have the edge over the other. For most of us the decision to buy one or the other is economic. We have an inventory of one manufacturers lenses that we can't afford or can't be bothered to replace. There are some idiots in the world that think everyone should own what they own. Maybe to validate their own decision. They probably have an opinion on Fords vs Chevys too.
While Canon and Nikon have been the leaders for a long time there are now many other choices. So if you're looking for a new camera, don't ask here. You'll just get a bunch of BS. Read the reviews. fondle the hardware and make up your mind what's right for you.
Remember I said those Germans, that came to Japan to teach, brought cameras? Look at daddy and his two children by different wives.
The only people that should care what anyone else ... (show quote)

Hmmm. What's your point?
