You also lowered the camera angle slightly, and arrived at a better composition.

Yes, I think this one is better. Thank you for your input. Kept me on my toes. That is a good thing.

I might lighten it a bit. Possibly lessen or remove the vignette.

Those are changes I can make in post. I'll give it a whirl. Thanks for the input.

Eric, I feel that an HDR should give better results due to the lightness of the wood and the darkness of the plane. Give some attention to the shadow while adjusting the lighting, it seems to be to dark and distracting.

HDR? Not sure about that. But....selectively altering the darkness of the metal and adjusting the shadow should be something I could do in post. I will try it. Thanks.

There is an advantage to leaving your set up alone for a while. Because I got really good advice about the lighting and the brightness, it was easy to re shoot this still life since it was still all sitting on my workbench. I like the lighting in this version better. I also made a black and white; but the color appeals to me more.
Erich

I like this second version much better. Everything pops just a bit more. And would love to see the B/W version.

Yes, the 2nd version is much better. One thing that bothers me, only slightly, is the newness of that plane. It looks like it's the first time it's ever touched wood. Which makes it look like a photo-shoot display, instead of a carpenter's work.

But, that's just nit-picking.

Bingo! Much better IMHO, Erich.

Good eye! I'm not a carpenter and that plane is brand new. Why do I need such a tool? Don't know; but it is cool and I want to learn how to use it. Maybe I should have bashed it with a big hammer a few times before taking the photo. Just kidding, of course, but there was no way to hide that it is new.

I like window light for "old timey" shots. These things on a sawhorse or workable in front of a window in afternoon light perhaps.

Hi Frank. Here is the black and white version. I still like color better; but members' curiosity must be sated. Here you go....

I agree I prefer your second version color shot. I am kind of surprised I am a bit disappointed with the B/W version

Good point. I used artificial light in a garage with no windows. I think I might just look for a place with natural lighting for the shot. Late afternoon or early morning might work. Something to think about. THanks.

Well darn! Here I am on the opposite side from the pack again. To me, the setup looks completely natural. There is pleasing contrast, and the warm color of natural wood. The lighting in the "enhanced" second photo has taken away most contrast and all of the natural color, leaving it rather cold and sterile. Could be my monitor...?

There is no problem at all being on the opposite side of anything. That, after all, is contrast....which is a good thing.
