Really like this Erich. I have done woodworking for years and know the satisfaction of making shavings.

Thanks for sharing this.

Can't fault anything technically, Erich, but compositionally and color-wise, it feels a little lifeless.

Thanks Ed. Just a fun shot. I've been wondering what I could do to give it a bit more ooompfh.

Thank you for pointing that out. I had not given much thought to the color. It seemed fine; but you might be on to something. Do you think that the blandness of the composition is due to the location? Would it be better with a different background? Would you add tools or squares or a small level? I'm not sure what direction to go here for an improvement.

The background and location are entirely appropriate --in an organic sort of way-- but adding other tools might be more of a distraction. Lighting differently would make a major difference, I think. Maybe more side-light oriented, low and almost raking, rather than the more or less high frontal at present, and there'd be a little more visual interest.

I like it, Erich, but for my taste it needs to be brighter.

Nice Erich , it’s a memory jog for me I haven’t seen a wood plane in many years.

A very good point. I'm going to do a re-shoot with better light. Thanks

Yes, it should be brighter. I was slightly brighter on my monitor; but I adjusted the exposure to be about a stop brighter and that was an improvement. I'm also going to take the above suggestion of changing light and direction of light. Wish me luck.

That plane was what interested me in the shot in the first place. Something about hand tools that I really like.

There is an advantage to leaving your set up alone for a while. Because I got really good advice about the lighting and the brightness, it was easy to re shoot this still life since it was still all sitting on my workbench. I like the lighting in this version better. I also made a black and white; but the color appeals to me more.

You also lowered the camera angle slightly, and arrived at a better composition.

I might lighten it a bit. Possibly lessen or remove the vignette.

Eric, I feel that an HDR should give better results due to the lightness of the wood and the darkness of the plane. Give some attention to the shadow while adjusting the lighting, it seems to be to dark and distracting.
