A Nikon 60mm macro will do or you can put the 850 in DX mode and shoot a 40mm macro. Depends on which of these lens you have. Works just fine for me. I mount the slide in the adapter and use ambient light, adjust the exposure and post process in Lightroom. Some of my 50 year old slides come out better, especially if the original was underexposed. I can fix to some degree in LR.

I am using a Nikon 60/2.8 Auto Focus (non-D) on my D850 with an ES-2 for this purpose. Best of luck.

I use an ES-2 with a 60mm f2.8 D lens. Works great. You might want to get the G version if you think you might want to go to the Nikon Z series bodies in the future. The D version won't auto focus with the Z series bodies.

You might also want to shoot tethered to do copy work. DigiCamControl works fine and it is free. You can buy a 10 foot cable from Amazon. If you are looking for editing software, CaptureOne also has tethering and they have a Nikon only version that is reasonably priced.

How do you know what is the emulsion side of the slide?

Is it necessary to use a tripod since the slide and lense are in a fixed position?

I am going to get 60/2.8 AF. I have Z7 as well as D850.

What does DigiCamControl do? Does tethering require a third party software?
I have Photoshop to do post processing.

Tethering is connecting your camera to your computer. It allows you to view what you would see thru your viewfinder on your computer screen before you take the picture. You can check to make sure the slide or negative is straight in the holder and the holder is straight on the lens. You can also see if you have a clean image to work with and you have complete control of your camera from your PC. You actually can release the shutter from your PC. I do use a tripod when copying slides and negatives.

The software that you load on you PC to do this is either DigiCamContol or CaptureOne. PhotoShop doesn't have tethering functionality and Lightroom's tethering doesn't really work very well. Hope this helps.

Lightroom's tethering works VERY well, at least for me!

Neither will the non-D version.

I will try Lightroom first since I have it. But I am interested in CaptureOne because it appears to have more image processing controls on image while being tethered.

I do and Nikon recommends their 60mm macro. It works great!
