Thanks Hazel, now just got to watch for a sale....lol! will check on what a past user like me can get as a trade-up discount but likely a new "deal" will be the best bottom line...I'll see.

I like Scott's book a lot. I bought Adobe Photoship Elements 9 Classroom in a Book. Comes with a DVD with all the photos used in the book included.

I just change the photo to B&W and then zoom into the item that I want to bring back the color on and use the eraser tool and erase the item and the original color comes back.

The book mentioned above by dspoon is "The Photoshop Elements 9 Book" by Scott Kelby & Matt Kloskowski. Excellent! Amazon is taking pre-orders for the "10" book.

For anyone with an older version of Elements -- for the first time they are offering an "upgrade" (you normally have to buy the whole program). Check the Adobe site to see what qualifies. Though with some of the sales I've seen, it may just be cheaper to buy the whole thing!

I did a short online course with Kim Klassen. She offers a free course called Skinny Mini. I found it very helpful for beginners. Here's a link to her page.

That sounds great to me too. I have photoshop 9 and essentials and it intimidates me terribly. I looked at her web page. Thanks.

Hi, All

Costco.com has now listed Elements 10 for $49.99 as promised. It also has free shipping.

I am going to see if I can pick it up in the local store tomorrow before ordering online.

Wow! Well, I have Elements 9 so I am not sure how different that is from 10. Anyway, to create a layer do this: go to the top and click on the tab that says layers. From there you can either create a new layer or a duplicate layer. I'm not sure what you are trying to do. What I think you are trying to do is to add color an object in your picture. If you are trying to do that then you would:
1. Make a duplicate layer of your picture by going to the layers tab and selecting duplicate layer.
2. Select your original in the layers bar to the right of your screen. Turn your original to black and white.
3. Select the object that you want to colorize by clicking on the quick selection tool and selecting the object.
4. Right click on the selected object and click on layer via cut.
5. Move that layer to the bottom of your layers in the layers bar on your right. When you move the layer via cut layer to the bottom, the object that you selected should revert back to its original color while the rest of the picture remains black and white. Make sure that none of your layers are locked. If any layer is locked, unlock it by selecting the layer and going down to the bottom and clicking on the box right next to the word lock.

Hopefully that helps. Let me know if I can be of more help.

I like the video tutorial wolfman included. Another way is to select the part of the image that you want to have in color and create a layer (selection tools). Select the layer you want in B&W and Click on the following - Enhance, Adjust color, Remove Color or on windows Ctrl+Shift+U. You can then make any adjustments you want to the individual layers (contrast, clean image, color, etc.). Last needed step would be to convert all layers to RGB- Click on Image, Color Profile, Apply sRGB color. This puts it back into one layer. Some may not like this way, but it is a fairly easy way to do it.

Thanks for the heads-up Larry, I went to COSTCO and bought a copy this morning. The price on the display was $79, but it rang up with a $30 discount.
