Hello! I am new to photography, and am currently using the trial version of Photoshop Elements 10. I Can't for the life of me figure out how to get partial color in a black and white photo. I see how to take the color photo, and turn it to black and white, then I get lost. I have watched several tutorials on it, but none seem to work. I am completely lost when it comes to the layers... any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Here's a good tutorial that's fairly easy to follow.

This will also work in Elements 10.

just now reading a great book on Layers, by Matt Kloskowski. In very basic terms you just need to create a copy of the background layer, so you have two versions of the color photo in the layers window. Then click once on the new (top) layer and make it black and white, then use the
eraser tool to remove the black and white ....which will show the color layer below. There are other ways to do it, to be sure,...but this is the very basic approach.

Photoshop Elements Techniques is an AWESOME magazine & website! The tutorial mentioned above is one of over 800 on the site for members only! I do a lot of teaching of Elements and this helps me come up with projects for classes.

Save $10 on a 1 or 2 year subscription with my code:
http://store.photoshopelementsuser.com/cart/checkout/subscription/HAZEL. The reg. price is $59 for 1 yr, $99 for 2 - and right now they are offering great freebies with the subscriptions. The $10 off will appear when you click on the 1 or 2 year button. ENJOY!

Layers are the one thing in Corel that defeats me repeatedly, books don't seem to help, If you don't mind I would appreciate a short step by step, Bob.

I did a short online course with Kim Klassen. She offers a free course called Skinny Mini. I found it very helpful for beginners. Here's a link to her page.
