Mount it on the camera (camera off), turn on, focus once, and then turn off camera. Remove the lens and if the rattle is still there, it is most likely the lens.

Thanks for advice - I have now been advised that it is the IS. My 45-175 does the same - now that I have listened for it! The noise does disappear once camera is powered on.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice on how to negotiate with seller and ebay. I am most grateful to all.

WOW, I got to the thread a little late. I read your query Delderby. My first thought was use a search engine. But there is always someone on the Hog that will think for us. Want us to be the grass hopper. I love Sigs Art primes. They rattle also. Had a store offer to give me some cause they rattled. I used the search engine and then called manufacture. Man I never hear the Hogs call Manufactures customer service. I have NEVER had a bad experience with any call that I have made.

I Derfdog  The rattling is normal for the Lumix 14-45. It is the image stabilization that is not powered on yet.

User ID The above is the only thoughtful advice so far, and it took three whole pages to arrive here. Typical of UHH, still more knee jerk “advice” is sure to follow :-(

@Delderberry: Do you have other OIS Lumix lenses for comparison? They all make a noise such as you describe. The real question would be whether this one sounds very different or is worse than normal. Having several of these, I can describe the normal rattle as audible but not loud, and easily unsettling when one encounters for the very first time. Hope that helps.

Presumably you ordered this cuz it was a favorable deal. Don’t unravel it if there’s no actual reason.

Thanks for the lesson, Grasshopper, J. R.

There should be no negotiate with seller and ebay as the lens was as advertised. The issue was explained to you my several people and sourced from a photo internet site. If you try to send it back or worse ask reduced price it would be a fraud in my book. It seems to happen to many sellers.

OK grasshopper. Let me tell you what would happen if this happened to me.
I would notify the seller that I am returning the lens because something is rattling from within the lens. If the seller did not confirm the return within 2 days I would open a case with ebay.
I hope you paid through Paypal. Once the case is open, they will give the seller a limited amount of time to OK your return.
Trust me, Ebay and Paypal will take care of you. I have had to open two cases over my 15 years in doing business on Ebay and both times Paypal and Ebay stood by me and we got the issue resolved.
Good luck grasshopper.

I have had one of those lenses for 10 years, and it always has rattled a little depending on how I held it. I suspect that it may be the something to do with the image stabilization. Mine has worked just fine all of these years. I would suggest you try it and see if it works OK before going through the return process.

Turn the camera on the lens engages. The camera and lens must be connected.

I just opened a case through eBay and it was refunde with in 3 days. Go online, www.eBay.com/help. There is a spot where you can have eBay call you. It will give you the amount of wait time for the return call from eBay. Tell them the problem and ask them to help you open a case. I believe the seller has three days to reply.
You should have no shipping price to pay when returning. eBay will send you an shipping label by email to print. I normally tear off the old label and place the new one on using packing tape.

Some lenses will make noticible rattleing or clunking sounds when moved. Ken Rockwell usually mentions that when reviewing a lens, but, I could not find a review of your lens on his site. I suggest 2 things:
1. Check the internet for reviews and comments about the lens. The noise may be normal.
2. Put it on your camera and see if it works as it should.

True!

depends if it has a 'floating' element in the lens.

I had a new Sigma (35mm I think) pancake lens with a pronounced rattle. I bought it from a reputable dealer.

I would have returned it but it was 25mls away and I was going to a photo show where Sigma had a stand.

Spoke to the guy on the stand and he picked it up, rattled it like a pair of maracas and said it was completely normal. He explained that the floating element took up position when powered and sure enough as soon as on their camera body (as was with mine) no rattle, and perfect focus.

So before you 'give the seller a piece of your mind' check the lens doesn't have a floating element; that the rattle disappears when powered up on a camera; and that focusing over the range is as expected for speed and accuracy. If in doublt phone Panasonic UK.

Worth looking at the seller feedback also and if plenty of good feedback as seller, then it could have just been damaged in transit. Still his problem to fix but if s/he looks a good seller don't assume the worst?

The packages are usually insured. If so try to have the shipping company pay to replace or repair.

You can assume the lens was damaged in shipping.
