Thank you to all that responded.

I seems that many appreciate the video quality more than anything else. Sadly, I do not shoot videos so I cannot consider that as a plus, sorry. Still, your information is good to have for other folks who maybe considering this camera.

As noted, the need for an optical zoom is a requirement I cannot let go.

Thank you for helping.

RGG.

I never use video with the M4 and it has optical zoom.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 IV, not M4.

Excellent travel camera, light and versatile. Never a competitor to cameras with interchangeable lenses nor full frame high megapixel sensors, particularly when your goal includes very large prints. For 90% of my shooting, particularly for slide shows, it would be more than adequate - but I’m enough of a snob that I choose my 5D-IV most of the time, and never regret it.

I love my RX102. I also have Sony full frame bodies and lens and am having trouble with the weight. The only thing that keeps me from getting an RX4 is the amount I have invested in my full frame equipment.

That is a deal breaker for me:
- I want an optical zoom
- I typically shoot from 35 to 150mm
- raw is a must (for me).

The optical zoom is 25X with 600 equivalent mm's at long end. Does raw, 14 bit.

You may have read Gene's post a little bit wrong.

The Sony RX10 MIV has all of that and more. As several have mentioned, the menus are different from the Canon I finally sold and purchased the Sony RX10 MIV. I purchased mine from one of the members here (he liked it but he was going smaller for physical reasons). Great camera

Good at just about everything.....great lens , not too heavy, pretty good in low light, great image quality
A few shots Ive taken with it.....all at full zoom apart from the landscape shot.
It would be an improvement if you had the ability to zoom in when the focus is locked as in a dslr but apart from that...no gripes at all and no lugging heavy lenses about.

The RX 10 IV covers everything you need in a camera. Shoot RAW+ jpeg if you want and it’s optical zoom. Traveling I put it on my belt with Black Widow Spider holster. It’s great! Why lug around bag with 3 lens and by the time you pull out stuff, change lens, you probably missed the shot or you spouse is yelling, “will you come on, we’re getting to the best part”. So it’s not FF. Not a deal buster. I took this picture of comet NEOWISE with my RX10 IV on great tripod, 5 sec f 3.6 ISO 1000. RAW and LR post. Rent it and yes menu is a beast, but give it a try. Don’t think you’ll find another camera that can pretty much do it all like RX10 IV

I also purchased The Friedman Archives Guide to Sony's RX-10 IV from Amazon and it is a great book and helps you get all out of the camera's potential. I recommend the book if you get the camera.
Good Luck

What is your take on it? Good and bad.

Not just good! Excellent, fantastic, best general purpose camera I've ever owned; my grab 'n go camera.

And I also own a Sony A7S, A7 III, A6000, A6100 and have had an A7R, A7 II and A7R II as well as numerous Canons along the well.

The Camera is definitely a great "Jack of all Trades" camera. The IQ is a little less than the D5300 (with good lenses) that I used to use, but the focussing system more than makes up for it with a much higher keeper rate on any kind of action shots.

It's biggest faults are the menu system and the touch screen. The menu system can be overcome with time. The touch screen is dim compared to many others and very limited in it's usefulness as a touch screen. The screen also only flips up and down and not to the side like many of the better ones these days.

In low light and very bright conditions like out on the ocean, the focussing system will sometimes struggle but so do most other cameras.

The ability to have one lens on the camera that goes from 24 to 600 mm with decent IQ and only weighs 2 1/2 lb is amazing. I can do 90+ percent plus of what I want with this camera and that is more than I could do with a $10,000 plus DSLR setup.

It has optical zoom—24-600mm equivalent. It also has two forms of digital zoom that are optional.
