What is your take on it? Good and bad.

Good. There are many posts on this camera already. You can also search for pictures taken with it on 500px.
If you are in doubt, do as I did with the "3" and rent it for a week. I was so impressed I ordered a new one from B&H before the week was up. I rented from LensRentals and I recommend them. I later upgraded to the "4" because of the much better AF which is very good for BIF.

Feel free to ask specific questions of me or the other owners.

Technically I don't own one. It belongs to my wife and she has had it for only a few weeks. She bought it at B&H where there is a guarantee of complete satisfaction or free return. She did not use their Payboo credit card. She wanted the long lens but was afraid of how it might feel in her hands and the weight.

She is very happy with it and says she is keeping it.

She is a good photographer. I doubt the RX10 IV will in any way limit her creativity. Note that she is not a "full frame" pixel peeper that judges work with only a lupe.

Expensive, good lens, menu needs getting used to. Image quality is outstanding for any size sensor, even more so when you consider it is only a 1" sensor, light at 2.5 lbs, battery lasts about 300 shots, camera does not come with a battery charger - you need to charge by USB cable. Fast electronic viewfinder, great video, only 12 bit raw, very fast frame rate at 24 fps max - I'd buy it again. You've seen some of my images but just in case - you can make your own assessment:

Thank you. I have DLed the manual and do not find anything about 'zooming' but digital zoom on JPG only.

This is odd, am I missing something?

Gene excellent samples but... Did you crop to get the bird?

I sold all my Canon equipment in order to fund the purchase of a Sony RX10 MIV. I have not been disappointed. I spend an inordinate amount of time filming stage productions with little light. The resultant images are, in my mind, exceptional. The only downside is the cost, but well worth it when you consider it is the only equipment you will need. Good luck.

And that's the right answer, you nailed it. The camera is both good and bad.

Thanks!

The sparrow was slightly cropped (taken with the RX10M3 when I was demo-ing it just before purchased the RX10M4), the great blue heron was uncropped.

Digital zoom is in fact only available with jpeg, as well as Clear Image Zoom. CIZ is an advanced set of interpolation algorithms that work when you are close enough to the subject and there is enough contrast to define edges. When you have poor light, low contrast or you are too far away from your subject, the results are pretty awful. I don't find CIZ worth the value of shooting raw, even it if is only 12 bit - I can still do better with going with optical zoom and enhancing microcontrast in post processing.

One thing I neglected to mention in my earlier post - I have never experienced such fast and accurate focus acquisition and tracking, and the spot meter mode has highlight protection if you want it, which I think helps better than shooting with auto ISO. It's not going to protect highlights when you have a wide exposure gap to correct, but with mild overexposure - 1- 2 stops - it does a great job.

For me, the "good" is, it's an adequate replacement for my Fuji HS50EXR which was getting somewhat "querky". Judging from Gene51's work, I have a long way to go to meeting the RX10M4's potential.

Wow, that was extremely helpful. . .

I guess you missed/did not understand the title where it says (only owners, please). Just sayin'

Gene is an Exceptional photographer! So I bought the M4 last year after learning it has the same Amazing tracking abilities as the Sony a9. Its Incredible! I have a spider carrier and can hike all day with the camera hanging by my side. Only 2.5 lbs. Great in low light with an Amazing reach! You won’t be disappointed.

Gene, you may have been saying the CIZ is 12 bit and I don't know anything about that. But just to be clear, the raw images are 14 bit. RawDigger says so.

I agree about CIZ. It's great when shooting video but not as good as post processing from raw stills. I have it turned on but when shooting raw or JPG+raw it is still inoperative. That way it automatically comes back on if I press the little red button for video.

I have gotten some really good stills by extracting frames from video clips and CIZ or not, video can sometimes capture a subject such as an uncooperative bird when stills just can't. It's a good option to have and with this camera, it's very convenient.

Have used this for almost 3 years now and never use my Nikons Any more. Being able to easily carry 25 to 600mm all day and forever coupled with very good image quality is remarkable. I still like my Nikons but never get around to using them. You’ll need extra batteries only Sony originals. For what you get, the cost is ok. Note that this camera has held its value.

Thank you.

That is a deal breaker for me:
- I want an optical zoom
- I typically shoot from 35 to 150mm
- raw is a must (for me).
