I found an a99ii on E-Bay by this store for $2,400. It's listed as new-in-box import model with a one-year parts and one month labor warranty. It's NOT an authorized Sony seller. Should I run away as fast as I can or consider the purchase?

I would look for a used version from a trusted reputable seller ( 90-180 day warranty) - I have seen them for $2K + or - .....

If you don’t mind gray market products, they are easy to work with, I got a great deal on a Nikon D500 with a one year sellers warranty several years ago.

It all has to do with your comfort level for risk. One month labor warranty is too risky for me, but you may want to live with that.

I've heard from others on UHH that import models are not covered by warranty in the US. Not sure I'd go that direction. Second problem is ebay. If this is an import where is the seller? If it's coming from over seas - run away. I've been ripped off a couple of times from over seas shippers. Not on Camera gear but on TV replacement parts. If you run into a problem with the shipper you will not get help from ebay.

They may have an office / phone number / email address in New York but not much more. Most "reputable" Chinese companies will advertise "From China". Most disreputable Chinese companies have contact numbers all over the place. I would first try to call them and then think twice.

I wouldn't take a chance. That's still a lot of money, and forget about that so-called warranty.

My local Bestbuy has a USA version for that price as open box special. No need to deal with a likely shady outfit for a grey market version.

Why didI say shady ? I can read. It’s in their name. I wasn’t born yesterday... were you ? If so, get smart. The nature of your post suggests that you are already smart and have your doubts but remain tempted and just want us to all dump in the deal to reinforce your will power against the deal. OK. Count me in.

The local Bestbuy deal has been dropping in price gradually for well over a year. No one wants it. I expect it will be just part of the debris in the someday future when the building is demolished. Are you reeeeeally sure you wanna spend 2400 on a solidly confirmed dead end ?

For well under 2400 you can get an a7II USA new, plus a pair of Lea4 A-mount converters ... yup, a pair in case you damage a mirror. The whole a99II AF system is inside the Lea4. Like I said, I think you’re already smart !

You’re not the only smart one, which is why that open box special never sells. It’s all over for SLTs ... waaaaay past all over.

If it's too good to be true, it usually is.

Aren't mirrorless cameras a lot smaller than an SLTs? I bought a used FZ-200 about 4 yrs ago for a trip to Israel and I kept on getting my fingers tangled up and hitting the wrong buttons because I was used to/preferred the feeling of the bulkier camera. From what I've seen, most any E-mount lenses is also more expensive than an equivalent A-mount lens. Some time go I saw a comparison of similar ff a-mount vs e-mount systems and the costs of the e-mount set-up was several $000's more. I have noticed that sales at B&H and Adorama almost never have anything A-mount on sale. I hope I don't have to buy something I'm not comfortable using just to upgrade my system, and I don't really want to sell everything and change manufacturers. I currently have an a77.

The A99II will run circles around an A7II ..... including with the LA -EA4 adapter ! the A7RIV or A9 would be closer tho ...

I bought a Canon L lens from them (Deals All Year)about 2 1/2 weeks ago. It was clearly stated as new with what was in the box. It was 81.5% of price of USA dealers and a little less than most slightly used lens. 30 day labor and 1 year seller warranty. It took them 3 days to give the lens to UPS. It was packaged as well or better than Adorama or B & H. Everything was in box as stated and is fine. I read a lot of their feedback on ebay and decided to take a chance. YMMV. Ebay will make things right for you if seller does not soon after purchase. I bought another lens used from an ebay business, and it was missing a couple minor items(key for case and strap) . Lens was perfect. Seller refused to do anything and finally did not answer ebay. Ebay gave me a post paid label and said send it back to seller and they would refund within 5 days of seller receiving it. I chose not to return it, as it was such a good buy and perfect lens I did not think I could find another for the price. This was a very expensive lens and Ebay did what they should. You can have a problem with any seller. B & H and Adorama will make it right with minimal hassles, but you do sometimes pay a premium. I usually buy from them but decided to take a chance, first grey market I have bought. I might be more concerned with a body. Good luck on your decision.
