The "friends" are only suggestions based on others you have friended. They are only suggestions, and 99% of the time I simply ignore them. However, once and a great while I see an old friend I actually know/knew, and it is great to reconnect. Also great to keep in touch with far flung relatives.
Facebook only knows what you put on it. There are plenty of other other entities that probably know more about us than we think;

Delete the friend request or delete the friend???
For the friend request - use the delete button.
For someone who is already a friend - go to their page, click on the pull-down where it says "Friends" at the top of the page, select "Unfriend".
