When I go to FaceBook, I see a little number and circle near notifications.
Click on it and I get a dropdown with a bunch of friend request. ( see image)
My question .... do you know if that is actually coming from the individual.
or is FaceBook sending me all this automatically ?

Yes, it is normal. FB looks for people with some similarities to you and posts them. I have found a few friends that way. You can confirm, if you know them and want them to be your "friend". You can delete them or ignore the whole thing.

One of the scams is that after people get a hold of friends list(s) they spoof someone's page, creating another "page" for a user. Then they send friend requests to all the people on the person's friends list.
Every time I see a friend with a "new page" I PM them to see if they created one. All are spoofed pages.
I only get other friend requests from 6-8 people a year that I do not know. It's rare that I will accept one as checking "their" page usually reveals something is hokey because their "friends" list and other things don't seem to align comfortably.

Correct. I have less than a dozen maybe, that I've added to my circle.
I use it to keep up with family and friends from the places I've lived. High school classmates, past co-workers.
It's an very easy way to stay in touch.
I've even found some long lost cousins (genealogy findings).
Have you not made some "friends" here on UHH?

I agree ... but I know all the people I'm receiving these request from.
Some I have rarely seen since school days, but still know them.

Facebook doesn't create "Friend Requests" they display "suggestions". Slightly different...

I also do not use FB, but most likely these really are acquaintances. They put the knowledge they have to work and look for more business for themselves. The fact that they already know so much about their members is more dis-settling than their ‘merely’ guessing.

When I get a suggestion l look at their profile to see if they are actually photographers. Too often they only have a lot of shots of themselves or give a teaser with a promise of racier shots by visiting their website. Generally I mark friend requests as spam if #1 we don’t have friends in common and/or they don’t meet the legit test described above.

I don't use it either but not because of "friends" - I just don't like the company tracking my every move.
As far as the friends part of it - everyone on this site is your "friend". We can all see everything you post
whether it was meant for everyone or not. And I have many friends on various photo sites that I have never physically met. This whole forum is about sharing ideas and techniques, which is exactly what friends do.
