Hi everyone, I have been following this discussion for about a year and have really enjoyed it. Now I need some advice. I want to upgrade my D5300. The D500 is my choice but not my pocketbooks. I am debating between D7500 and a D610 full frame. They are more in my range. I have a Nikon 18-200 lens that is my carry around and a 40mm micro and don’t know if they would work on D610. Any advice would be appreciated
Nikon is offering a big discount on the D610, it is a great deal.

The D7500 is a few generations newer than the D610, but it is not a FF body.
You must decide which way you want to go.
I love wildlife photography and like the advantages of a cropped sensor camera. But if you just want general photography FF is the way to go.
One of the best replies in this thread.
Recently, I did a comparison, which unfortunately was moved to the gallery by admin, I compared 4 cameras/sensors. It proved interesting.

Your D5300 is a cutting-edge, professional-grade DSLR featuring an industry-standard 24MP sensor. You can buy another camera to spend money, but there won't be any real difference, even in moving to a full frame camera. A D500 may produce excellent images, but are you shooting birds in flight or sports that justify paying a premium for an extreme frames per second burst speed? If the D500 presented budget issues, have you considered the additional cost of FX lenses into a FF idea?
What do you envision happening with a newer camera? Do you have FX lenses that sharply focus in image circle onto a still-higher megapixel sensor? Are you capturing your images in RAW and processing with professional-grade software? Do you have an external flash? Do you have a quality tripod? My point is to try to redirect an urge for a new body onto areas that are more likely to yield improved results with your current body.
It's your money. It's your decision. It you let the UHH community spend your money, nothing you have will ever be good enough to their standards.

I agree with this 100%. Have you considered some new lenses? It sounds like you have limited glass. Adding some lenses will give you better results than either of the new bodies you are considering. For the same $600-$800 range you are looking at you could add 35mm 50mm and 85mm 1.8 primes. All tack sharp excellent lenses. Or you could add the 3 DX AFP zooms 10-24, 18-55 and 70-300. All nice lenses and pretty inexpensive. My opinion you would get more value out of adding lenses.

Good logic....thanks man.
Going for the D610 will cost you money for lenses as your 2 lenses are both DX and although can be used on the D610 they would yield poorer images than the D5300. They only give you about 10MP images out of a 24MP camera.
So if you only buy the body and the choices are only between the 2 then it's the D7500.
With that said if you let me use either the D5300 or D7500 I think the only thing I really miss on the D5300 is the sub command dial.

So happy to read this. There are so many members who get convinced they need to upgrade in various ways, when it's completely unnecessary and won't improve their photography in any way. An example: "I mainly shoot photos of my grandchildren in the backyard. Should I upgrade to full frame?" There will always be one or more members who will reply with a "yes." Your description of this syndrome as letting other UHH members spend
your money is perfect. >Alan
The D7200 has served me well for several years, the duel command wheels are a must shooting wildlife. I use FF lens as their a little sharper in the center (I crop OFTEN). The D7200 and D500 both have duel slots, both are set for overflow which was used once in Africa.
Save your money and get a D500 . . . It is likely the best DX Nikon camera and can use all of your current lenses. I upgraded from a D5500 a couple years ago and kept the D5500 as a backup . . . I never used it because the D500 is so awesome. So hang onto what you have until you save a little more up to get the D500. You won't regret it. The D500 is simply the best there is . . .

AMEN.
Given everything Paul said, above, I'd invest in some good photographic education. Knowledge, experience, and critical analysis of your results will be more valuable.
No one cares what camera you use*. They care about what your images make them feel or do! Moving people with images is a practiced art.
*Except for Uncle Benny at the local camera club, who's always sidling up to someone, saying, "My lens is bigger than yours!" (His wife rolls her eyes and giggles, shaking her head, "No way.")

Check the used mkt for the D500, might find the right one at your price point. Good luck.
