That’s what I thought. Not a good idea for the OP.

For 10 years, I used Picasa; and, it worked fine for Windows. When I switched to an iMac in 2010, I was able to continue using Picasa. . .

However, in 2019, my iMac crashed beyond repair. I was "forced" to buy a new iMac which was loaded with Catalina, a 64-bit OS; and, I could no longer use Picasa.

Picasa was perfect for all my needs even though Google no longer supported it. Picasa was OK with it to do the minimal amount of editing I wanted or needed.

My problem: I need a FREE editing application that will run on a 64-bit OS (Catalina). . .I only need to be able to perform SIMPLE edits on my photos: change from RAW to JPEG (for e-mailing or inserting into a published page); adjust shadows & light & contrast on photos; perform simple "album-creation" and file storage, etc . . .

Please help me or recommend a SIMPLE TO OPERATE APPLICATION. I am too old to relearn photography all over again (after using 35 mm for 50+ years!) I shoot with a Nikon D7100 and a D7000, my only concession to the 21st Century; and, I really struggle with the User Manuals and David Busch's books! <smile>

Have you tried Photos that comes free with Catalina?

I have gotten mixed responses when I asked if this is for your operating system. If so, it is a really free full version.

Think Photos for the Mac OS is your best bet, or at least give it a try. Far warning - i am using it on Mojave on my Mac, which is the previous OS to Catalina, but I would think Photos would be at roughly the same on Catalina.

While I have ON1 for working with RAW images, I also shoot a lot in jpeg on a point&shoot, and find photos more than capable for quick edits (straightening, cropping, auto or manual color adjustment, etc). Very quick. It also has the advantage, if you have an iphone or iPad, of seamlessly sharing to those devices.

For something simple, I think it would be a good place to start. Price is right as well, as it is already on your machine.

Good luck

FWIW, i also noted you got to this via a unrecovable crash. Sorry to hear that. Regardless of your decicision, please make sure you put a physical or cloud backup service in place

Good suggestion. I am not a Pnotos fan, but have been surprised how well it works. They have improved over time and good for the run of the mill editing.

Select the Apple "Photos" icon and you will have an easy to use FREE photo editor.

I totally get it, wanting to save money. And for many, $9/month is not a way to save money. I've just found something I wasn't expecting. Affinity Photo is currently on sale. Just $24.99, and it is all paid for. No monthly payments. All upgrades are free too.

I paid $49 two years ago, and never sorry for a moment. So you can purchase it for $24.99. Worried it may overpower you with all-up-front options, then test-drive it, with a free trial offer.

And by the way, everyone, I am not an Affinity salesperson. Those of you who know me, know that I teach college physics. Like many of you, I've been doing photography since I was 14. And, I've "grown" through all the Photoshop upgrades, beginning in 2005, thru PSCS5. In fact, I have more than 20 books on Photoshop. It's a great program. But for me, I'm enjoying the experience in learning another program, and pleased to find some new features I've not seen before.

Enough of that. I just think that Brian might enjoy Affinity Photo for $24.99. Maybe others here will too.

Use the software that comes with Nikon cameras.... You'll get used to it if you put some time into it.

Photos and Preview come pre-installed on Macs. Unfortunately Boberic referenced Faststone which does not run on a Mac.

FWIW: I downloaded a trial of the latest Affinity for my Imac. I use Lightroom & Photoshop (Adobe CC subscription), DXO Photolab Elite 3 , ON1 2020 for my edits normally.

Testing with Affinity I found it was much slower opening my raw files than Lightroom, that in itself was enough to stop me right there. Perhaps it is good with little JPG files, but I work with raw files.

Now, while I sometimes itch for learning new programs also, I did download Luminar 3, a free licensed version and added it to my editing programs, but everything still begins and ends in Lightroom.

FWIW - Yes, you can get Luminar 3 for free for a Mac. It has some uses for me as a plugin to Lightroom, and once learned looks like a fairly decent editor.

I agree that Affinity Photo has been slower to open my raw files. Like you, I shoot only raw. At the advice of a former student of mine, now an IT person, I expanded the memory of my iMac and it has helped. Aside from that, what did you think of the program?

Now that my semester is nearly concluded, I have my stack of four books on Affinity Photo which I plan to read and study. I want to become as proficient with it as I have learned to be with Photoshop.

And should there by any fellow member here in St. Louis, doing Photoshop, I have more than a dozen books on Photoshop that I'd gladly give away. I've learned a great deal from them, and glad so much of that has been transferred to my Affinity usage. I like to share books.
