Nice article and very nice photos. In similar news, wild boars are wandering freely in the city of Haifa, Israel.

WAPO is crooked, of course, but this story is confirmed by other sources.

Interestingly; however there have been a lot of jackasses in Washington, DC for years (Both D & R).

Presumably jackals are the wild animals of the area, so they move in when people hide, just as deer would in our area. When we lived in Western Massachusetts, bears would be the first animals to openly move in.

You seem confused. Newspapers report the actual news. They don't make it up at press conferences.

They go where the money is - working fort big corporations. D & R - it doesn't matter. Money talks, and they listen.

And I saw with my own eyes a photo on our local news of a wolf on the main drag of Chicago.

When did they start reporting facts and actual news? All you need to do is change channels and it is a whole new set of “facts” that represents that particular stations political views. And yes, every day, they make crap up and call it news.

Can’t tell whether your remark was a facetious one or an actual viewpoint, Jerry.

Here, two days ago there was a picture in the local paper of two mountain lions strolling down the street in the middle of the day.

For the most part, they are no longer journalists. They've become novelists. John Fowles summed it up in one sentence in the French Lieutenant's Woman: "Writers wish to create worlds as real as, but other than the world that is." Unfortunately for us, they've lost whatever objectivity they may have had when first they decided that the pen was mightier than the sword.

And, coyotes are roaming around in Chicago. Wildlife is coming around a lot more since the lockdown. As to your article, I read that people were putting out dog food for the jackals. Probably not a good idea...

For those of you who have difficulty believing that black backed jackals would move into their old territories in search of food...I've seen them around camp sites in the Okavengo Delta of Botswana doing exactly the same when the camp site is abandoned. I've seen wolves standing besides a busy highway in Alaska just watching cars go by. Of course, bears are notorious for hanging around dumps imposed on their natural areas in places like Yellowstone. Here on Hawaii Island when plots of land get graded the egrets magically appear circling and landing within feet of the roaring D9 dozer as they look for insects disturbed by the activity. People have been losing their pets to coyotes moving back into Los Angeles for decades. Here on Hawaii Island we also have herds of feral goats wandering lava fields next to our local Costco at a busy intersection. You can doubt WAPO and I understand but that doesn't make the photographed images of the jackals "fake news". It can pay to consider the evidence first.

By the way, to my eye the black-backed jackal is one of the most beautiful canids whereas the African Wild Dog is one of the more ugly even though their behaviors are quite different.
