If you are comfortable using layers, I suggest taking the original image and lightening only the hills and the barn a bit and leaving the sky alone. I love the foreboding sky and think it loses a bit in the lightening of the entire image. IMHO, of course!

Well done! Using B & W on that old wood is a great choice.

At first glance, I also thought it should be lighter. But after seeing the lighter version, it looks a bit washed out.
In your 1st, the darker one, by the looks of the shadows, it appears that the sun was shining on the side of the cabin. That high sun makes for bringing out the texture of those logs.

Many thanks KT, I appreciate your take and suggestions and, you are correct regarding where the sun was and how it affected the cabin....love these scenes!!

Not to be a smart **s, but you might want to schedule an appointment with your oculist if you really think that flat, uninteresting image is better than it would be in color. Remember, you see in COLOR.
