Depends on how old the computer is, right? My thought was that the OP may have a card reader in the computer but not using it for some reason. Funnier things happen.

No, it depends on weather one has to have something newer, or not.....

I usually use things until the break.
Desktop is over 7 years old;
My laptop is 8;
Wife's laptop when replaced (kept throwing up) was 9.5.

Cameras one going on 14 years, camera two going on 10 years.

They all do what I need.

Although the possibility is remote, you can short the card reader in your camera in a direct camera to computer via USB cable alone. Improper shut down of the direct link can "short" out the card reader board in the camera. Can you spell EXPENSIVE?

I am often poo-poo'd on this, but I have seen manuals which have cautioned this problem (Nikon for one).

I have actually seen three high end DSLRs which have required sent to factory for this repair. (one a Nikon, and one a Fuji built on the Nikon 200 chassis-A Fujifilm Pro S5)

I have been a Computer tech for 20 plus years, and field tech for Dell part of that time.

I would never (will never again) connect a digital camera to any computer directly. I've seen and experienced the failure of the card slot in camera's for myself and a couple of clients. I know that one improper shutdown or disconnect can take your camera out of service, no matter how remote the possibility

Hello! I read that it is better to download your photos to a card reader and then go from the card reader to the computer. It was said to be better than downloading photos directly from the camera using a USB cable. I have to admit all I've ever done is use the USB cable.

Just in case I should use a card reader, is there one brand that you recommend? I have several that were given out as premiums for marketing events. I don't know if I should trust those or not.

Any insights you could share would be most appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.

Use of a card reader is not a two step process. In other words, you don't download your photos to the card reader and then transfer from the card reader to the computer. Instead, you insert your SD card into the card reader; then your computer uses the card reader to transfer images from your SD card to your computer. The card reader will have a slot to insert your SD card into, and a USB plug to insert into your computer. Its very simple, cost effective and reliable.

Let's ask the OP. Does your PC have any card reader slots? If so, why are you not using them?

He messaged me. His Dell has a random problem with the built in card reader so he’s using a separate reader.

I use a reader too. When researching one, make sure it is USB 3.0 if you have a USB 3.0 port. It will upload your files faster than 2.0. I have one of each. Don't ask...🤐

Faster, yes.
One minutes vs. two minutes?
(I'm not in THAT big of a hurry.)

I use a Transend. It will do SD, microSD and CF. Works well for me.

I have a reader from Sony that takes SD and XQD. Works great. Would rather take the cards out of the camera.

I had that same issue on an old Dell Inspiron desktop computer. Never got the reader working properly.

I use sandisk and have used the same one since my 10D.
Never a problem all these years.
Just get a good name type brand like this. It does NOT need to be expensive at all.

I have always used a card reader. Was having a problem with my built in card reader on my laptop and got a USB 3 one. It was a little more expensive than most ($15 PNY) but it reads several cards: X-card, SDHC/XC, Micro SD, MS PRO DUO, M2, and CF UDMA. I was looking for SDXC.

Actually, I found a card reader is best. I just remove the card from my camera, insert it into the reader and plug the reader into a USD slot on my computer. Simple and I don't need cables. It's not much larger than a flash drive

Just use the brand that came with your computer. Most fairly modern to modern computers (desktop or laptop) have SD card readers built in. So do a lot of printers. Don't pay for something you already have.

Linda I use a Lexar Pro which is USB 3.0 compliant and has both SD and CF slots.

I have several Lexar card readers (used to get them free) and they will ONLY work with Lexar branded cards.
Maybe that has changed.

Also, Micron sold the Lexar brand to a Chinese company and they reworked the company. I don't know anything about them now.

I only use a card reader. Why use a $2000 camera when a $20 card reader will do same thing
