I got the same email but it does not mention or say one word about the Lowe's credit card. It does say the veteran must be registered with a Lowe's online account but that is only an online registration, not a credit card. As for HD, they and Lowe's carry pretty much the same things, but I have not found a Home Depot store in the Houston area that offers any kind of a military discount. I am not saying that there are no stores that offer it, just saying that I have not found one.

It is HD policy to give military discounts to active duty vets, retired from the military vets, disabled vets. All other vets receive a discount on holidays, armed forces day etc. but not on a daily basis. If Lowe's is changing it's policy, I will go along with the credit card deal. Just because you have one does not mean you have to use it! Besides I pay off my cards at the end of the billing period so there is no interest paid usually. To avoid missing a payment, I have all cards set up with minimum auto pay. This way I never get charged the 25.00 or 39.00 fee for missing a payment -- which would only happen if I were away on vacation or had a medical issue. I think I paid something like $2.65 in interest last year. (p.s. I always show my veterans ID -- which is obtainable through a VA clinic, and 95% of the time they give me the 10% discount any time of the year. There is one older lady that will not and if I see her as the only check out person, I wait until another day or go to Lowe's -- depending on urgency of need and cost. I wouldn't sweat a 5.00 purchase for instance.) Make sure you get your Veterans ID from a VA clinic and then ask the clerk as you go to check out at the self check out "Can I use my veterans ID here at the self check out?". You will find virtually every one will look at the ID and scan in their authorization badge.

Look, they want to verify that you really are a vet. Even the FedGov has verification policies. It took me several tries to get lined up with the proper ID to be able to prove my disability was Service Connected so I can now shop on base at the PXs'. Don't trash Lowes for wanting to verify you. They have LOTS of scammers who try to get that discount.

They just took my information and checked my DD214, put me in the system and now all I have to do is give my phone # to the checkout person.

That same lady or her sister must work at the HD I "used to" shop at. She made me change to Lowe's.

What a commotion over discount. Home Depot has never said a word about discounts but I still shop there. Lowes sent out Notices for their Veterans discounts. No credit card required, Just a My Lowes account. I have saved Hundreds of dollars in discounts there. Lowes also has Veterans parking spots and employees that were Vets were special vests.
It is your choice where to shop. I don't beg for a discount. If it is offered, I may decide to use it on Larger purchases.
My understanding is that many people were actually cheating to get the discount. That is when they decided to have a my Lowes account and to show any id at the check out.
So quit whining and bad mouthing things you know nothing about.

The reason Lowes is so veteran friendly is because the company was started by two veterans on their return from serving in WWII. They felt a kinship to fellow veterans.

Last summer while remodeling our bathroom Home Depot asked me to sign up on line for a Military Discount Id number. Now at check out I touch the discount button and add my phone number. Clerk says thank you for your service and I don't have to show any Id. That is here in Utah, may be different else where.

It's the ID card one gets when they retire from the Military. And it's blue.

And this is why I brought it up in discussion, I wasn't sure if Lowe's provided that benefit to all Veteran's (with a DD214), or just to Active Duty and Retired military.

Lowes to all vets at all times. HD only to active duty, retired military, disabled military and all vets on holidays, Veteran's Day, Armed Forces Day etc.

I simply provided the proof of service to get the discount. It did include the Lowes CC which I have never had to use to get the discount. In the past month or so they are now asking if I want to put the purchase on their card. No; and there is no problem. BTW , I’m retired National Guard.

For non-military customers both Lowes and HD gave a 5% discount or 6 months credit with no interest on purchases when using their credit cards and then HD discontinued the 5% discount and offered only the 6 months credit without interest. I wasn't interested in the 6 months deal so I just purchased most things at Lowes and received the instant 5% discount but have noticed that in the last several years HD has come around and started offering some special deals, therefore started carrying their card again.

The email I received from Lowe's, stated they wanted me to verify my address on my ID and my MyLowes card were the same. (The MyLowes card is not a credit card, go on Lowe's website to see what the MyLowes card is! Your veteran status should be registered on the card) Because as of April 1st, when you go in they will be checking to ensure your address matches both places! My understanding, this is because people abuse the military discount by giving their MyLowes card to their friends to get the discount. Nothing in my email said I needed to sign up for a Lowe's credit card.

When Lowes announced that veterans could attach their status to the Mylowes card I applied online but still had to take my DD214 in to the local lowes for verification. Now when I go in I just show them Mylowes card and pay for my purchases with either a card, gift card or cash. I have never had to give them my phone number at the register. I do have their cc and I always show my MyLowes card. Supposedly My veterans status automatically attached to the CC since I was already registered.

HD is as some posters have said the daily discount is only for active duty and retired military. However if there is someone on the register that has a member in the military will usually go ahead and give you the discount. I have found that the application of the discount is applied differently in different areas of the country. By the way I have not received the letter from lowes asking me to verify my veterans status.

You, Sir, are INCORRECT about the requirement of a Lowe's CREDIT CARD account. NO WHERE in the email does it mention anything about having to possess or open a CREDIT CARD account. It mentions that a "My Lowes" account number OR a PHONE NUMBER (used to register for the discount) must be submitted at checkout or online.

The MY LOWE'S account is NOT a credit card nor is it any type of payment card. It is a means of tracking your purchases, interested items, receipts, and orders ONLY. It is also a means of identifying those of us who have submitted documentation to validate our eligibility for the Military Discount Program.

Lowe's has really watered-down the Military Discount Program. Formerly, it could be applied to any purchases at any price point. Now sales or markdown items are not further discounted and the discount no longer applies to appliance purchases.

I am not trying to be harsh, but you should carefully read all of the details of an email message before shooting from the hip and spreading incorrect information. It's not fair to Lowe's and it is misleading many people.

Woke up this morning to an email from Lowe’s announcing a new policy re the 10% military/veteran purchase discount. As of April 1 (interesting choice of date), to receive the discount the veteran must have opened a Lowe’s credit card account and added requested mil/vet info. Sound familiar? I’ll bet this is designed to offset the 10% by banking on a percentage of vets maintaining a credit balance and paying a monthly balance on Lowe’s card vice Visa or other mainstream cc.
For me, I will simply drive about two blocks further up the road from Lowe’s and make a right turn to HD. HD, so far, only asks for an ID to receive the discount. I will use Lowe’s in lieu of HD if HD does not have the product I want; and then the can keep the 10%. With the new policy, I wonder if the cc will be required to be used to obtain the discount.

Some time in November we shopped both Home Depot and Lowes for a washer dryer set. Both had the same ones on sale for the same price. HD would not give a veterans/military discount on top of the sale price. Lowes did. Guess who got the sale.

If Lowes stopped giving the active service and vet discount on appliances and anything on sale, they'll lose a lot of sales.

It's not like they lost money on those sales. Are they having financial difficulties? If not, sounds like they are getting greedy, disappointing a lot of loyal active/vet shoppers.

I filled out the simple paperwork and provided a copy of my discharge a few years ago. Since then, I have received a 10% discount on every item I have purchased with a “My Lowe’s” card, which is nothing more than a scannable ID card. Along with the discount, I most often receive a grateful and sincere comment, such as “We appreciate your service”. I have not purchased any large appliances, so I cannot verify any limitations.

I am a “reguler” veteran and have always received the discount at HD, on holidays or not. Apparently the rules vary by region or other variable.
