New Veteran/military discount policy @ Lowe’s

Woke up this morning to an email from Lowe’s announcing a new policy re the 10% military/veteran purchase discount. As of April 1 (interesting choice of date), to receive the discount the veteran must have opened a Lowe’s credit card account and added requested mil/vet info. Sound familiar? I’ll bet this is designed to offset the 10% by banking on a percentage of vets maintaining a credit balance and paying a monthly balance on Lowe’s card vice Visa or other mainstream cc.
For me, I will simply drive about two blocks further up the road from Lowe’s and make a right turn to HD. HD, so far, only asks for an ID to receive the discount. I will use Lowe’s in lieu of HD if HD does not have the product I want; and then the can keep the 10%. With the new policy, I wonder if the cc will be required to be used to obtain the discount.

I haven’t received that email notice from Lowe’s yet, but my inclination is to go down the street to HD, as well. Lowe’s just may be shooting themselves in the foot. Lots of veterans shop at Lowe’s, imagine the huge loss of revenue that Lowe’s could experience due to this new policy.

I got the same email but it does not mention or say one word about the Lowe's credit card. It does say the veteran must be registered with a Lowe's online account but that is only an online registration, not a credit card. As for HD, they and Lowe's carry pretty much the same things, but I have not found a Home Depot store in the Houston area that offers any kind of a military discount. I am not saying that there are no stores that offer it, just saying that I have not found one.

You, Sir, are INCORRECT about the requirement of a Lowe's CREDIT CARD account. NO WHERE in the email does it mention anything about having to possess or open a CREDIT CARD account. It mentions that a "My Lowes" account number OR a PHONE NUMBER (used to register for the discount) must be submitted at checkout or online.

The MY LOWE'S account is NOT a credit card nor is it any type of payment card. It is a means of tracking your purchases, interested items, receipts, and orders ONLY. It is also a means of identifying those of us who have submitted documentation to validate our eligibility for the Military Discount Program.

Lowe's has really watered-down the Military Discount Program. Formerly, it could be applied to any purchases at any price point. Now sales or markdown items are not further discounted and the discount no longer applies to appliance purchases.

I am not trying to be harsh, but you should carefully read all of the details of an email message before shooting from the hip and spreading incorrect information. It's not fair to Lowe's and it is misleading many people.

They want you to register for a MyLowes card, which is not a credit card. You do have to show your relevant I'D to the the card. I think HE has the same policy.

I went to Lowes about 6 months ago expecting to just show my Vet ID and get the 10% like at HD. But NO! I had to go to the customer service counter and give them ID, show them my Vet ID, fill something out, wait for them to enter me in their computer, and then get reimbursed the 10% back to my card. Come on Lowes, you can do better than that.

A HD employee, a vet, said that HD does not advertise the military discount but gives it when asked.

Here in oregon, I have been getting my Mil discount at lowes for several years now. It only took a few minutes to fill out their form and any time I show them my "My Lowes" number which is not a credit card. I get my discount. The "My Lowes" is your history of purchases at Lowes. Rather than trying to save the custom order paint can lid. They just look up your account and bingo, the paint fromula is there. Sometimes having big brother keeping a record is a good thing.

Never fails! We can always count on misinformation on topics such as these. The real beauty of it is that readers often spread baloney. I suggest that folks check the requirements and benefits first hand as me and a couple others have.

Lowe's started this over a year ago. I remember in 2018 going to Lowe's and they were transitioning over to requiring active duty and vets to register for the discount. It was not, and still is not linked to their credit card. At that point I stopped going to Lowe's and took all my business to Home Depot, where I can still show my "blue" ID card and get the 10%.

Once registered you never need to go through that process again. All you do after that is give the cashier your phone number to get the discount.

But the OP of this says that will no longer be the case until you apply and get approved for a Lowes CC.
