Click the window in the lower left corner of your monitor>go to setting click update and it will search. I usually check daily especially on Thursday when updates usually show up. Even if it say you don't have an update click the update button anyway, most of the time there is at least a defender update.
I have Windows 10 Home. There’s no control over when the updates are done.

I understand. Too bad it won’t provide notices, but you can check under settings periodically to see what’s available I suppose.
While I have used Windows since the first release and think, on the whole, that Win 10 is the best and most solid release so far, I truly despise the auto update policy if you’re not running professional.
Correct. My fix was to pin Windows Update to the Start. That way I see the tile and am reminded to check.

Let me restate my issue. I have no way of knowing the optional updates are available if I get no notification of such. The optional updates, apparently, do not install automatically. The important ones do.
Okay, here is what to do. Go to the search box at the bottom left side of the desktop and type in there "windows update". A window will open and near the top you will see any updates that are available, or it will say you are up to date. Someplace it will tell you that they will update later after a restart or you might see a place that says update now that you can click. Try that and let us know what you found.

Already know how to do that. My whole issue is that I would like a notification in the task manager that the updates are available such as I had in Windows 7.

I have the same problem but there is supposed to be an option to do a restore if done in 24 hours. I have not had it work. Windows 10 is in my opinion malware. It fits the definition. It sends info to microsoft, lets MS make changes on your computer you may or may not want, and prevents you from deleting or changing the information. The Feds need to do something about this but I doubt they will.
To the OP: There is a setting in the network settings called "metered connection". You might want to look into the benefits of turning that "on". If I remember correctly, Windows will then allow you to install the updates when carrier charges are lower. Google "Windows 10 metered connection" to find out quickly where the setting is.
You find what's available for Win10 Updates by going to Start-Settings-Update & Security. Windows Update shows what's ready to install, or that you are up-to-date.
You can postpone updates on Home AND Professional, but not indefinitely. No, there are not "Recommended" updates and "Optional" updates anymore, like in previous Windows versions. Now it's "Updates are Updates."
But it DOES pay not to rush to install the updates immediately. OS makers (not just Microsoft) do sometimes release updates that have problems. If you wait a while, you would get updates that are more likely to be right.

I'm new to Windows 10. In Windows 7 I had the option of being notified when updates were available. I could then select which to install. I can't seem to find that option in 10. Comments?
It depends on which version of Win 10 you have. The Home edition does not let you skip updates, but will tell you when one is about to happen. The Pro edition(s) allow more control over when they will occur, and whether to accept it or not.
