I'm new to Windows 10. In Windows 7 I had the option of being notified when updates were available. I could then select which to install. I can't seem to find that option in 10. Comments?
I only seem to get notices about mandatory updates. They are not frequent.

I believe that in Windows 10 you cannot decide whether or not to install updates. In Windows 10 Professional, I think you had some control but not total. Windows 10 was designed this way so you cannot choose to not install an update that would interfer with some future updates being able to install.

I have Windows 10 Professional. If you go to Windows Updates you can see Optional updates and you can click to download but I do not get any notification that the update is available.

As stated previously, Windows 10 professional will allow you to postpone updates indefinitely if you wish (although you shouldn’t), whereas the home version will only allow you to postpone them for up to 30 days max. You can decide in settings when during the day or night the updates are applied.

Yes, avoiding updates can lead to problems. Of course, sometimes the updates themselves cause problems.
Let me restate my issue. I have no way of knowing the optional updates are available if I get no notification of such. The optional updates, apparently, do not install automatically. The important ones do.

I have an HP Dv7 laptop that came with Win 7. I upgraded to Win 10 and since then all was good....until I went to shut down and my choice was to "update and restart". So I did. After an hour it was still grinding away. I knew something was terribly wrong. I let it grind all night long. The screen was black the next morning. I had to hold the power button down to turn it off. Waited...restarted, and got the same black screen!
So thanks Microsoft!! I now own a brick.

I understand. Too bad it won’t provide notices, but you can check under settings periodically to see what’s available I suppose.
While I have used Windows since the first release and think, on the whole, that Win 10 is the best and most solid release so far, I truly despise the auto update policy if you’re not running professional.

I have run into the same issue with several hp laptops.
The fix is a system recovery using a Windows disk and even then it will actually take multiple recovery runs.
