I suspect that some of these problems are with those who got the free Win 10 upgrade on a Win 7 machine. My current Dell came with Win 10 and I’ve never had an update issue. I’ve never had to do it but I don’t think it’s very difficult to roll back to the previous update and stick with that or try another update again.

I was wondering the same thing. I had HUGE issues with a machine that I updated TO Windows 7, and always thought that people were crazy for liking it. I didn't have a windows 8 machine, but when I got a new computer with Win10 installed, I loved it, and couldn't figure out the issue. I agree, maybe the issue is with machines that weren't originally Win10 machines?

I ran an XP machine until last year. But it was offline only, a dedicated application.

Running Win10 on everything now (except the iPhone) and it's fairly stable. It still crashes but I haven't seen a blue screen in years. It just hangs.

The problem I have with updates is not just Windows. LR/PS updates occasionally change settings that I don't look at frequently and I only find out later that the last 6 months of LR were done without generating xmp files or including metadata in exports.

And another problem, is that the majority of us are computer operators and not operator/technician. If, you are the latter, you are able to troubleshoot the problems. And fix it yourself. Even the newest cars with complex computer boxes, makes it difficult to fix your car nowadays.

I've never had a problem with an update. But you can't go backwards and then retry or stay backwards turn off your updates.

Just to clarify: if you have recover points enabled (you should), you can revert to a point before the update. Also typically if the update fails to complete, Windows will automatically roll back to the previous version. With the consumer version (which the vast majority has), you cannot turn off updates, only delay them for up to 30 days. The professional version will allow you to delay updates indefinitely (and that is likely the only advantage to the professional version for the non corporate user).

Another reason I'm keeping 7 as long as I can (until a system dies), until they get most of the bugs worked out.

They've got most of the bugs worked out from the original OS and the updates made over the past few years. It's the new updates that introduce the new bugs that need to get fixed. That's been a feature of Windows since the beginning.

Both my wife and I have used Macs for the last 5-10 years, but keep windows boxes for some windows-only software that we each use. I replaced my windows box about a year ago, and just did my wife's last month (both old ones ran Win 7 Pro and the new ones have Win 10 Pro). As far as I can tell, my windows machine has had no hiccups from updates over the year. (Taking time to knock on wood with BOTH hands . . . )

I don't know why some have all kinds of issues, and some (I'm guessing a lot of us) don't. Of course, who ever posts "Yay, another successful update?" You only hear when someone has an issue...

I sure hope you get it fixed, and hope my computer doesn't catch whatever yours has.

What he said...

I’ve heard about that too, no problems with updates. So no I’m wondering that the brand of PC might be an issue, or a power surge/drop during the update, maybe even a broadband glitch during the process. Lots of mechanical issues to be considered.

I build my own and I use only name brand hardware, but I have a Dell laptop that has been great, BTW my PC is completely ebay stuff, new and used, have never had a problem. I think most PC problems come from software and drivers.

Me too. Also. This week.
UAC is back. Why? 2 more mouse clicks to do anything.
I had other security apps- gone. Defender is back. why?
I had all the Win7 sounds in a Resources sub directory. And over a dozen custom themes. Gone. Why?
I went to edit my hosts file. I didn't have permission. What? I had to "share" it with myself. Why?
The calculator in my taskbar- gone. I didn't want Bing, nor did I want it to work my pdf files. Almost all my 3rd party utilities got de assigned. I DID have upgrades disabled and/or paused- didn't work.
I liked Win 7; but I really loved my custom Win 8.1: Win 10 hasn't improved me. I may revert this weekend.

Quit complaining. Microsoft knows what's good for you. Always have, they're just getting better at making you see it.

Take an image backup before doing the update. Any problems just reinstall the image until you work out what the problem might be.
I have had a few problems with installing Win 10 on very old PCs where the hardware was no longer supported. However got past that by installing older drivers for the device and had no problems since with them. Also had a problem with Win 10 not starting up because Dell hadn't updated a driver which was stopping Win 10 from starting. Fixed this by installing from scratch an earlier version of Win 10, updating the driver, then installing the later update over top. This did take 2 days work though.

Then by all means revert to 7, not 8 (POS)!

I have found Win 10 to be deeply flawed. I, too, am sticking with 7 as long as I can. We have 3rd party virus protection going.

Deeply flawed? Maybe it's YOU.

Virus protection is not the reason to move from 7. EVERY OS...Windows, Mac, Linux.... gets SECURITY patches on a regular basis, which safeguard against all kinds of invasions. Until, that is, Microsoft, Apple, Linux developers decide that an OS version has gotten too old to be patched effectively and stop supporting and developing it.

Antivirus program makers do the same thing. Your AV program will reach an endpoint for Win 7 support. So will every other kind of program.

Like it or not, that's progress.

I had an interesting and insoluable problem with Win 10 after updates soon after installing Win 10 free. One update caused Microsoft Edge to quit working--kept getting "can't connect to the Internet" messages. No attempted reset or fix would work. My other two browsers had no trouble. Edge still doesn't work on that computer.
