You must have just gotten here. You keep on reading and you'll see that not everyone is as kind and respectful as you think. But ignore those and move on to the more kind and encouraging replies and you'll be ok. Sometimes it takes thick skin here. Welcome to UHH.

I've learned a lot from UHH. I have no formal photography training, I'm just teaching myself. And I've benefitted so much from other people's advice and comments. Add humor and just plain being nice to the knowledge factor and this is the place to be!

A little light on the humor. For some...nasty and arrogance has replaced the humor and being nice.

Good morning RobDale -

Contrary to what we are all seeing in our daily lives and throughout the world there actually seems to be isolated pockets of genuine "civility". That's what I have noticed most at the UHH site. Although offering genuine / excellent advice, civility and kindness is what comes through for me at UHH.

All the best to you and yours,

Terry

I have been so impressed by the helpful spirit that is evident among such a large majority in this community of photographers. Your kindness, encouragement, and respect for one another is apparent through your comments. It appears that you are accepting people where they are at the moment with their skills.

Yes!

Social media can be a wonderful thing but, it's no replacement for a couple few good books on photography.

But social media can help you find those good books.

I've seen plenty of humor on this site. While, yes, there is meanness and arrogance, I choose to ignore it. Focus on what matters...nice people, good advice and a little fun in your day. If you concentrate on the nastiness, it just brings you down.

Not focused. Just an observation.

Agreed! Not “everyone” meets the kindness standard, but most do and most offer genuine, helpful advice. Ignore the trolls, I say. Welcome!

Robdale understand we all had to start somewhere. I for sure did not have any help when I started over 55 years ago with an all manual camera and a Weston exposure meter, hand held at the time. I made many mistakes, my exposures were a disaster and although I was in total frustration I did not quit. I better don't tell you about my adventures in the darkroom because disaster is the only word I could use.

I wish I had at the time the many tutorials found in the Internet today and the help of groups like this where many good people offer their talents to teach and help others. For me it was a very slow and frustrating road and at the time not many photographers willing to teach others.
In spite of all setbacks but very slowly I began to learn from my past experiences and from reading photographic magazines. It was all b&w at the time and I still remember the first roll of Kodachrome 25 that I used, another disaster for me talking in photographic terms. It took me some time to learn to expose slide film.

I am so glad that I discovered UHH and that I was accepted as a member of the group. I have learned a lot here also.

UHHers are an interesting group. I think that, in terms of the total UHH population, the vast majority are nice and helpful. i'm guessing, however, that the percentage of posters is small. Within this active subgroup, there is a significant percentage of ego-strutters that too often respond with sarcasm, snarkiness, and disruptive behavior. Having said that, most of us will react when attacked. That can cause us to leave civility behind and say (write) things we might later regret....
