CHG: You've just nudged a question this rookie has had since first reading about the Canon 1D X Mk III.

It befuddles me as to why a 20 meg sensor is perfectly adequate for a $6500 flagship "full frame" DSLR, while the likes of Sony, and its competitors seem to need 30MP, 50MP, and even more to satisfy the professional/enthusiast market.
I believe there's a reasonable and rational answer, it's just not clearly understandable to this neophyte (me).

Don't feel so befuddled. There is no answer.
But none is needed. All is well. Chill :-)

Once you get past several pages of Canon corporate lore, their white paper on the features of the new EOS 1DX III has some interesting information. Here's an extract where they discussion their 20MP reasoning.

Brilliant sales move not to get caught up in the Pixel war. Photographs, like everything in the digital world, are conveyed information. The quicker high quality information can be dispensed in our modern world, especially with news cycles seem to last minutes, the better.

The answer is FPS and low light performance - perfect combination for pro sports photographers.

Many here have posted on the death of the DSLR. Well, according to Canon and Nikon, that statement may be a bit of an exaggeration?
Canon just released the 1DX MarkIII and Nikon the D780. Nikon also introduced the new Nikon 120-300 2.8 zoom.
Mark Twain said it best, “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”

I’m surprised the 1DX mk III only has 20 mps...that won’t get me upgrading

As a side thought from "CHG CANON" the mirrorsess may not be as failure prone but they eat batteries. When will the have a battery pack as the SLR's do. The pack will take away the weight saving they talk about. Not against or for any of this, you just got me thinking or the pro's and cons

I'm not knockin either one but, once you add a fast lens of any focal length, I imagine its not that much lighter( maybe even off balance). Haven't held 1 yet.

One aspect of Nikon's Z system that makes it attractive is the new mount. It shows a willingness to innovate for the future, opens up for adapters that allow Leica M glass to be mounted on Nikon cameras, and allows Nikon to create a new line of lenses that out-perform any of the lenses they have made for their DSLR's to date.

Hopefully their next camera releases will put them closer to the competition.

I saw a short video clip of new toys at the CES. Photography equipment shown were Nikon's 120-300mm lens for F mount, 70-200mm for Z mount mirrorless Z6/Z7. The cameras were the Nikon D780, said to be a lot better than the D750. The Canon 1DX Mark 3. A Canon representative said it won't wait to use it for the 2020 Olympics in Japan. It will be used in limited use for the Superbowl, next month for testing.. The Canon 1DX Mark 3, will have the capability to shoot at a maximum of 20 fps. I met a NFL pro photographer about 3 years ago. He was using the first model of the Canon 1DX. He told me it was the camera of choice among NFL pro photographers. But, Nikon's best and most expensive sports equipment are competing with Canon.. Nikon's 120-300mm lens, will be a killer at the Olympics, with the D6. Sony's a9II mirrorless is also capable of 20 fps. The DSLR is not dead yet.

When you measure the ingredients of success, how much does the mirror count?

No more than lack of "the mirror."

Did you not get the memo? It's not all about megapixels.

AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR, $9,499.95...this would be a great lens to use for wildlife along with the D500. But it sure cost a lot! It's very frustrating to photograph wildlife at sunrise only to have to wait for the sun to rise higher in order to get a high enough shutter speed for quickly moving animals. I'll have to start saving!

I use the D500 along with the Nikon 200-500 at a very high iso in the morning without issue. The shot below is an example. Do not be afraid to push the iso on your D500, it can handle it.
Below is a Green Heron in flight very close, high iso and panning were necessary. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Photo quality is purely subjective so the actual camera device doesn’t really matter that much to the millions of people who take pictures. If it’s easy to use and satisfies their sense of a nice picture, any device will do.

I agree, whatever you have at hand will do.
